I don't think you are half as f**king clever as you think you are - your comment makes absolutely no sense in the context of what I was actually asking.
Why? "What" you are doing is useless information to anyone here. What might be informative is to explain "why" you are doing it (or thinking of doing it in this particular instance).Kalamata Kid wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2024 4:34 amStudio One 6 is my main DAW. I also have been looking at Reaper, Mulab and FL Studio to replace S1.
Just out of interest, those of you who currently own a license for Studio One Pro, why did you choose Pro over Artist? I'll admit I bought Pro because I'm an idiot and I assumed Artist wouldn't suit my needs, so I never even looked at it. But once I did have a good look, I realised Artist more than fulfills my needs. After all, it's the same installation, it's just that the Pro license unlocks more features. So it's always up to date and gets most of the same upgrades as Pro, at the same time. All for one-third of the price.

Except now (as of Dec 2023) there is no such thing as an Artist to Artist upgrade.BONES wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2024 12:10 pmI'll admit I bought Pro because I'm an idiot and I assumed Artist wouldn't suit my needs, so I never even looked at it. That was discontinued permanently.
So IF you are on Artist - enjoy it while you can. Your only option now is to go Pro.

My two cents fwiw:
Current Perpetual Users As in people who would never subscribe anyway:
Nothing to see here. Just keep upgrading whenever you see something worth upgrading for, or not. The product manager has made it clear - just like last time when the initial subscription drama came up causing massive threads like this two years ago - that the perpetual license is not ever going away.
Yes, you cannot buy add-ons from them anymore and I would say... "...so what?" There are tons of other companies out there selling instruments and plugins and audio tools. There is no shortage of others willing to take your money.
Current Subscribers:
Now they have additional options between the two subscription plans. Nothing else changes except for those who eventually can't afford it or need to stop paying for awhile, can't afford the bulk re-up price, they get to keep the last version they paid for.
Anyway: I tilted my head way back to look, and surprise, the sky is actually not falling.

Pro-Tools reintroduced the perpetual licence last October. The odd thing is that it is not available directly from Avid but is sold only by authorized Avid resellers.chk071 wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2024 9:29 am
with many of the major DAWs having subscription options, or even subscription only (Pro Tools).

1. When I switched to Studio One (4), the Artist edition didn't allow for 3rd party VST's. But this reason is no longer validBONES wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2024 12:10 pm Just out of interest, those of you who currently own a license for Studio One Pro, why did you choose Pro over Artist?
2. Video Track - even if I'm a hobbyist, I primarily enjoy discovering "film scoring" with orchestra libraries and all the fuzz
3. Pipeline XT - I have some 80s vintage outboard gear to use (e.g. reverbs) and I like their sound

Surely the big change is in the financial value of an existing Studio One Pro licence?
A brand new copy of the latest up to date Studio One Pro perpetual licence, along with many goodies, can now be purchased for $179.99 US,and it is upgradeable, not NFR. Which must mean that the second hand value of a used licence has plummeted dramatically. Personally, I never sell software, but many people do,which is why KVR market exists. They often sell to help fund new stuff, and what they own has been grossly devalued overnight.

First of all, Artist hasn't been discontinued, just the upgrade path. So if I want a new version, I'll just buy a new version. The price of Artist is the same as the upgrade price for Pro, so it's not like it's going to cost me any more. Secondly, I already have a Pro license, it's just not installed on any of my machines at the moment.Vocalpoint Studios wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2024 12:16 pmExcept now (as of Dec 2023) there is no such thing as an Artist to Artist upgrade. TBH, Studio One never had a big resell value, so, I guess that the change isn't that drastic.dellboy wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2024 12:56 pm Surely the big change is in the financial value of an existing Studio One Pro licence?

Yes, BUT, from Presonus' point of view: Why restrict their income by only making these addons accessible for the subscribers?LawrenceF wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2024 12:30 pm Yes, you cannot buy add-ons from them anymore and I would say... I think I know the answer: Because subscriptions even make more money, so that you rather give people another argument to go for the subscription.
Anyway, I don't really care for these addons either, it's just that they maybe should consider changing the name of Studio One Pro to Studio One Standard, or something like that, as it stopped to be the "Pro" version (i.e. the unlimited version) of Studio One.

The same can be said when a new version of software is released. V5 versions are worth way less than V6. V6 versions will be way less valueable than V7 when it is released.dellboy wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2024 12:56 pm Surely the big change is in the financial value of an existing Studio One Pro licence?

I don't think it is a good idea to count on the value of software as an economic asset.

If Studio One Pro now costs $179.99 with a lot of goodies thrown in, then a simple upgrade to the next version at a slighty reduced cost does not make economic sense. I forget what I paid for version 6,but its highly unlikely I would ever pay that much for version 7 in the future. I now see a possible upgrade price for me at around the $49.99 price point. Any more than that and I am out. That leaves me considering taking out the Hybrid plan for a year - which I guess is what this whole thing is about in the end.

Today they hold back one new synth that regular Studio One Pro users used to get. What's next? Another synth, effects or even features and functions in the future?
Vote with your wallets people, skip a numbered upgrade or two and maybe they'll wake up and smell the bad decision.
