Would you like to expand on that? Doesn't give the developer much to go on.

working beautifully here (as an AU, in logic pro). what happens with a re-install of icarus?FapFilter wrote: Sat Apr 06, 2024 10:30 pmi'm on Mac if that helpsFapFilter wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2024 5:38 pm sorry if this has been covered before, but i just got the update and both Reaper and the Icarus app now greet me with a critical error message, saying that an important file is missing and that i need to run the installer to fix it

It's good there are different synths for different people... absolutely no limitations is a negative for me. You couldn't pay me to use Avenger. It has too much of everything... including being sold to.bmanic wrote: Sat Apr 06, 2024 9:24 pm There's one huge difference between Avenger and Icarus though.. and that's the modulation matrix. In Avenger it is _extremely_ extensive with absolutely NO limitations.
I wouldn't mind a 3rd matrix row in Icarus but 18 slots is within the 97% range. The filter(s) have 4 built-in modulators which saves mod slots. The Osc's also have a couple dedicated mods.
Most of my Icarus presets are fairly simple, 1-2 Osc's and a filter. I've rarely bumped up against a limit in Icarus. If anything, I'd remove stuff from Icarus, not add.

I have all of Tone2 synths...Even before this came out, for my taste, Icarus was by far the best sounding of them all.
Icarus 3 didn't change that for me.
Features aren't my thing though, so especially with Tone2 stuff I am strictly presets.

Thanks, useful link. So Icarus is basically true stereo. I guess Electra might be able to do something along those lines by panning layers.zvenx wrote: Sun Apr 07, 2024 1:09 am I have all of Tone2 synths...Even before this came out, for my taste, Icarus was by far the best sounding of them all.

I have to say I find the Tone 2 line up a bit confusing. Hard to really know the differences between them.
A feature comparison table could be really useful.

Here is how I think of them and I could be very wrong
Saurus is an Virtual Analog synth.. I am not sure if there was one synth in particular he was emulating or a few in general.
Nemesis is mostly about FM synth stuff.
Rayblaster, I am not sure what type of synth algorithms it is mostly about... Markus's description I find a bit vague. I do remember a convo somewhere on kvr where a user suggested what it was and Markus from my memory didn't quite deny that it was indeed mostly that type of synth algorithms.. Rayblaster is by far my least favourite of the lot.
Gladiator, which is the first one I owned and probably the one I used the most, is something called HCM (Harmonic-Content-Morphing) not quite sure what it is myself
.
Warlock, I think was a modern version of something he had done awhile ago either in his refx days or just after.. Firebird maybe? (edit: I think Firebird was his first Tone2 synth, and i believe primarily HCM)
Electra is I think a hybrid quite a few synth types... whilst I dont see HCM mentioned in the quick look of its description I just took, it always reminded me soundwise of a modern Gladiator with lots more options.
Icarus, I always think of as at a heart a wavetable synth with tons of other stuff in it ... I think of of it like his version of Avenger/Nexus...For me it is the most versatile.
Yes I know, I don't think that was very helpful
.
But since he keeps adding stuff, I am not sure how well it could be put in a table, even by him.
I could be wrong.

If I had to rate them in sound appeal for me it would be:
1. Icarus
2. Electra
3. Saurus
4. Gladiator (though part of that may be for sentimental reasons)
5.Warlock
6. Nemesis
7. Rayblaster

My main issue with all of Tone 2 synths is that you very quickly run out of matrix slots simply by assigning midi control over things. Want to add modwheel to affect the amount and way velocity is affecting things? Not always easy to do. I usually calculate that I have to leave at least 8 rows of matrix modulation slots for the absolute bare minimum of basic modulation (modwheel, aftertouch and velocity).pdxindy wrote: Sat Apr 06, 2024 11:06 pmIt's good there are different synths for different people... absolutely no limitations is a negative for me. I can understand a "simplistic" synth not having a comprehensive modulation matrix but synths that try to do very extensive things and have competition in the same sub genre of synthesis, Icarus definitely falls quite a bit behind in this particular area.
But yeah, each to their own.

Its a perfectly normal and fair opinion. What you're writing makes no sense. Typically, customers that have already paid for a previous version (actually paid, not a free bonus version from some $5 magazine) are offered upgrade discounts. If someone can get a more of less free version from some magazine and get the same upgrade discount, this perverts the typical reasoning for having an upgrade discount in the first place. The reasons being that the paying customer monetarily supported the dev, and an "upgrade" provides significantly less utility to someone who owns the previous version of a unit compared to someone who owns no version and the paying customer already paid for their current level of utility. The developer is free to have policies like this, but I'm going to criticize policies that break basic and ingrained customer-producer conventions when they affect me.RPH wrote: Sat Apr 06, 2024 5:50 pmCalling the update policy an insult is not a normal or fair opinion.briefcasemanx wrote: Sat Apr 06, 2024 5:23 pm Yeah, giving my opinion is entitled be cause it differs from yours. That makes total sense.
Why didn't you just mail Tone2 about it? Instead you dumped it here, knowing what happened leading up to this release.
I am simply talking about value for product. If anyone has other considerations, like the common "supporting the dev" argument, that is perfectly fine for them but those other considerations are not part of my calculus, nor do need to be in order to purchase and or have an opinion about a product's value. I am not saying anything negative about the dev personally.
Edit: I actually have no idea if it's even true that you get the same upgrade price from a free Computer Music version of the synth. I'm ASSUMING based off what the original person replying yo me said. That could be false and then none of what I'm saying would make any sense.
I'm giving my opinion. Are only positive opinions about the value of the upgrade price allowed? Am I saying that people that think the upgrade price is fine are dramatic for sharing their opinions? It's "reasonable" for me to give my opinion about the upgrade price in this thread.pdxindy wrote: Sat Apr 06, 2024 7:53 pmIf the upgrade price is not worth it to you, fine... no need for any drama. It's reasonable for the developer to ask it, reasonable for you to be unwilling to pay it, and reasonable that I was happy to pay it. There's no problem here.
I was happy to pay it because Icarus is one of the best synths available today and IMO, the best synth available today in terms of sound quality/versatility vs cpu use.

Avenger sounds like plastic awful garbage, and has an even worse value for its upgrade price. My guess is that people who put Sausage Fattener and OTT all over every channel love how Avenger sounds. Or that guy who was arguing with me that a clipper should go on every single track in your mix
.
I'll take a limited mod matrix over Avenger's sound every day of the week. Although it seems curious from a programming standpoint that the mod matrix wouldn't be extensible. If it's a CPU issue just have a separate "High CPU" mode for those of us with strong machines that absolutely do not care about CPU usage.

I can’t either, though it’s likely because I’m in Japan and my computer is in California.
