Hi there

Saw this at Boing Boing , sounds weird but interesting.
Genemusik is a project that "takes fragments of conventional Western melody and sequences them as DNA that is subsequently ‘bred’ and ‘mixed’ within bacterial cultures." The system is being developed by Nigel Helyer at the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Western Australia.

DNA extracted from these cultures may then be re-
sequenced, translated to musical notation and interpreted as new musical forms. It is anticipated that the first public manifestation of GeneMusiK will be a series of elegant body adornments that contain ‘musicalised’ synthetic DNA sequences. Each item will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and an audio CD of the musical sequence. Subsequent editions are envisioned that will contain DNA sequences hybridised within bacterial cultures, together with installations of living ‘musical low-life’.
A link to the project is here

I'm not sure what they'll come up with , it could go all Frankenstein , arrgh the music it lives !

Cheers

PS Hopefully I didn't disappoint anyone who was looking for music to breed by :)

Saw that too... certainly looks interesting.

When I saw the title "Breeding Music" I thought you meant something like Barry White.

Yes I though that as well , so i put in the ps :)

This is the coolest thing (after Synth 1) that I've seen on KVR.

We live in interesting times.

Great link!!!

I'm also interested to see what results Genemusik produces, but my first impression is that it's a load of crap :)

From the brief descriptions I've read it seems like they want to use a kind of evolutionary approach to generating music by combining DNA. But how will they ensure that the 'better' melodic ideas survive to be passed on to the next generation? There seems no reason that something that sounds good musically will be more viable than any random string of DNA...

Imagine if instead of music they used letters, and expected it to generate poetry...

And the part about the jewelery just reeks of some kind of tacky commercial tie-in:
a series of elegant body adornments that contain ‘musicalised’ synthetic DNA sequences. Each item will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and an audio CD of the musical sequence.

that reminds me a of a sketch from a program called comedy nation that used to be on BBC2 in the uk, only ever met one other person who ever saw it (which is unfortunate cos it was fantastic)...

2 london producers were looking for new ways to put out their music, they decided that cds are too cumbersome and not really durable, so they decided to let their music out in virus form, eg the 4/4 flu which was a flu what gives you a headache what pounds at 90 bpm and progrsses over 2 weeks up to 140, was a lot funnier on the show cos they were really serious about it. they had another idea to give fetus concerts where they find pregnant women and get them to put big headphones over their belly and they'd do six hour ambient sets, once they were getting the unborn into it they'd play more percussive stuff eventually building up to gabba. :hihi:

It may not be poetry, but it would definitely be interesting. Expand your awareness, thats my opinion.

Not really connected to this , but still interesting is http://www.complexification.net/gallery/ , which is some of the best computer generated art I've seen , also it's interactive so you create your own

Lots of interesting stuff , I wonder if I can adapt some of his ideas into sound synthesis stuff

Happy New Year

/a none VSTi modular sequencer has a module that 'reads' DNA/gene sequnces. I played with it a couple of years ago but could never get it to produce 'music'. I might have to give it another go to check my DNA against David Blunketts.........
