Why did you leave Studio One?

For my part, it's settled.
I switched to Cubase Pro 13 and pure joy.
Once properly configured and everything updated, it works perfectly.
A daw remains a personal choice and one where you feel good, given the time you spend there.
Before, I only wanted Studio One and now, I have delved into Cubase Pro 13 and even if far from being perfect, it gives me better satisfaction for my use and responds more to my needs and expectations.

I had a fling with Reaper for its CPU efficiency and ran back to Studio One for its ease of use.

The fact is that the reason people are upset is because they love this DAW and don't want something they love to change, or they're afraid to lose it. That's human. On the other hand, unless they pull a "Full Avid," there's very little Presonus could do to make me quit Studio One, even though I have complained about certain ways it does things in this very thread. If I ever left it for real, it would just be because I try another DAW and I like it more. And I have tried pretty much every DAW out there because it does one or two things right by me that Studio One falters at. But each time, I come back to appreciating the fundamental UI concept that underpins Studio One, and it's REALLY hard. I think we're spoiled in here, honestly.
So while I'm not happy about Presonus's "Half Avid" move, I'm not gonna say much. Good on you guys for agitating about it; maybe they'll change something if enough people do.
Recently I've soured on the whole idea of an upgrade cycle. Auto-Tune Pro 11 just came out and people are going to be complaining that it doesn't do much over Auto-Tune Pro X, but I never upgraded to Pro X and the price of upgrading to 11 is the same for me as it was for X, even though I'm now two versions behind. Makes one think that as long as you can keep working, this stuff doesn't really matter too much. In the working world, pros are so used to this that it doesn't faze them. Pro Tools feels like it's immune to upgrade fever. Get a perpetual license, use it until it breaks, then upgrade, and so on.
But because Studio One is supposed to be one of the good ones, everyone seems to be collectively disintegrating when this is literally a better deal than anything they have ever released IMO. Sucks for the people who bought at the wrong time. I got the last Intel MacBook Pro for 4000+ USD before the M1 chips came out. Sucks to suck, I guess, but it still does the trick and I'm not gonna get overcome with FOMO; got too much to do.

So now I´m checking out other DAWs, mainly Ableton where I came from before Studio One was released. It has happened a lot with that one since the last time, but it seems a bit instable, though, so I´ll take a closer look at Bitwig and others.
As I said, I look at S1 with other eyes now, it´s not a given anymore as it´s been the last 10+ years. This 6.6 update was a big warning shot from Presonus about their new focus on money grabbing at all costs, so I´m planning to be able to migrate safely in time before they totally leave the rails on their way to Subscription Hell. I´ll make no new big projects on this DAW.
It´s so damn disappointing. But why should I be surprised, money rules everything and no higher ideals seems to be able to stand in its way hardly anywhere.

Honestly, hiding posts is silly since you miss out on half off the conversation. I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better?

It just sounds like you don’t want to pay what PreSonus is asking for. You’re not obligated to, just like you aren’t entitled to it.harddaysnight wrote: Wed Apr 10, 2024 3:35 amHere we go again with the white-knighting for corporations.
I don't get it.
Studio One 6 Artist WAS offered to 5 Artist owners when it first released btw, I just missed out on this as I didn't know it was a thing. There was a path offered to move up to 6, but it was taken away in favour of uh.. "give us more money!".
Nobody is suggesting these companies go broke and close up shop.
What I'm suggesting is there's no need for immense greed.
I'm allowed to say that. People are allowed to have that opinion.
There is no “immense greed” there, though. They just want to remain in business. And that’s what you don’t get but BONES does.
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

Exactly! Maybe in 5 years from now on there’s no DAW with perpetual license anymore. Then everyone has the free choice (again) by features/workflow because pricing doesn’t matter.hebex wrote: Wed Apr 10, 2024 7:10 pm It´s so damn disappointing. Even Apple did test the waters with their subscription model on the iPad version of Logic.

Same. Love Reaper, but then I tried to automate a bunch of parameters on an external synth and lost hours trying to streamline the workflow to no avail. The Noodlist wrote: Wed Apr 10, 2024 6:24 pm I had a fling with Reaper for its CPU efficiency and ran back to Studio One for its ease of use.
In Studio One I wiggle a fader, the DAW shows me the midi cc and let's me drag it to create an automation lane. Takes a second.
I hope in version 7 they add more color options like Cubase and Reaper. It's the little things that make a DAW feel more like a personal workspace.

I own Cubase 13 Pro as I picked it up for a steal - I don't really like it though.Trancer wrote: Wed Apr 10, 2024 6:08 pm For my part, it's settled.

I should spend more time with it as I own it, but have been considering selling it off.
There are some things I dig - MIDI editing is easy enough, I don't mind the piano roll.
I really dislike infinite pop-out windows though, that's the biggest deal-breaker for me, they're a nightmare. I prefer Ableton/Bitwig's all-in-one approach.
Cubase supports ARA though which is a huge bonus imo.

Do tell, which audio software is sub only these days? Very few, if any.
Sub-only would kill off S1 very quickly, unless they lowered the prices to $5-$10. There would be too much competition otherwise and they don't have the market share to pull it off. I see no reason why sub-only would even be an option.
This time subs were made more attractive.
What changed for you specifically in comparison with before the update?
I mean it is stupid to close the shop and release an update at the same time and not communicating the plans for the shop first.
There's nobody on their own forum that is answering the community questions.
Of course people will get a certain impression.
There's not yet reason to think things will change. Even if they would go sub only, you can still access your current version and export your projects and migrate to whatever.
It just looks stupid to say right now that you are migrating because of what? Poor communication?
Maybe Steinberg will make Cubase sub only next month. Maybe Ableton will be bought by Google and the tech will be used to make a web-daw (with advertisements of course). Maybe the 2 developers of reaper decide to retire. Then what? Will it make your current version stop working?

the only thing that has changed for you at this point: the presonus shop is temporary unavailable.

- The new synth is not, yet, available for perpetual license holders. This could be related with the store not being available at the moment.

I disagree - some archetypes appear on all forums, and I clash with them every time.
If I were younger, I'd have never considered doing this - but I find it's such an easier time to just remove them from my view now.
That same type of person is on all internet forums, there is always that guy and I never get along with them. Opposing world views.

Personally, I'm not migrating because of the hybrid licence thing.
I'm migrating because I own S1 5 Artist and there's no upgrade path offered at a lower price to 6 Artist anymore. There was initially, and they took it away in favour of forcing you to purchase a new licence.
I think that's disgusting. Some people are cool with pulling up the ladder on this and they can go disappear.
On its own, this tells me everything I need to know, and that information is enough to justify me leaving the DAW.

That´s correct. And such stupidity and lack of responsibility, on top of the hated subscription path -- which in essence signals contempt for the customers and manifested corporate evil viewing me as a potential future serf -- just takes away my further trust in their judgement. That company simply cannot longterm be trusted anymore with my business. I start to look elsewhere.Blaster wrote: Wed Apr 10, 2024 8:29 pm Presonus does & did a terrible job communicating this stuff. Don't be f**king ridiculous. Just because you don't like subscriptions, don't think for a minute that there aren't businesses out there who will only deal in subs. Businesses love subscriptions and Presonus will go where their market is. If you think that's the likes of you and I, I think you're way off the mark. Look at their product specialists - Gregor might do electronic music but he approaches it in a very traditional way. Joe Gilder and Craig Anderton probably represent Presonus's target market much better than Gregor does.
How would that work? You currently have infinite colours, how can they possibly offer more than infinite? It doesn't make sense.J Veronica wrote: Wed Apr 10, 2024 8:08 pmI hope in version 7 they add more color options like Cubase and Reaper. Your problem is that it has to be all about you. Sorry, pal, but that's not how the world works. If you shut yourself off from other points of view, especially those that don't align with your own, you will never learn and grow, you'll be a child your entire life. As Stephen Fry pointed out, this suits society because it makes you easier to control.harddaysnight wrote: Wed Apr 10, 2024 8:30 pmThat same type of person is on all internet forums, there is always that guy and I never get along with them. So they put the price up, that's life. Would you feel better if they put the price of Artist up for everyone else, so you'd still feel like you were getting a deal? Because I imagine that's the discussion they had - "we can put the price of Artist up and charge more for upgrades, too, or we make Artist NFR, with no upgrade path. We might lose a few people we never make money off anyway but it will also push a few more people up to Pro, which means we'll have more money to spend on development for the next release".harddaysnight wrote: Wed Apr 10, 2024 8:35 pmI'm migrating because I own S1 5 Artist and there's no upgrade path offered at a lower price to 6 Artist anymore. Yeah, I'm sure Presonus will really miss that $75 you spend every 3 or 4 years. On its own, this tells me everything I need to know, and that information is enough to justify me leaving the DAW.
