Sttjelle!!!!! Absolutely WONDERFUL piece, thank you so much for sharing your gift with us :) Have a Merry Christmas. This has inspired me to finish work on my entry for the winter comp.

This is about as perfect as it gets.

Well, I haven't caused any trouble in awhile, so here goes:

How serious is the time limit?

I've got something brewing that's really nice, but it's about 4:45...I'd really enjoy (for once) not having to cut all sorts of stuff and speed it up and kill the vibe to squeeze it into 4 minutes...

The whole point of it is that it's very leisurely and indulgent (the first 30-40 secoonds are just intro)...with an enormous guitar solo and lots of harmony vocals and dynamic changes and such.(That's what I like in songs...and that's what this contest is...)

So, what's the consensus?

Well, I have one that was 4:12 and I am shaving the ending off - even though it's the best part, but the rulez is the rulez and without rulez this contest would be a mess of be chaos, consternation and arbitrary opinions...

... So I vote that since I had to restrain myself, prolly many others did too so you might as well  ...if you care about winning.

On the other hand, if you're just in it for King and country, then damn the torpedoes and Godspeed. Let it be.

I'd be inclined not to worry about a few seconds here and there. some entries probably won't be more than a couple of minutes anyway.

er, 'let it be', or something

*edit* @You - I only just noticed the 'let it be' at the end of your post...

Considering there is the requirement of a 2 minute excerpt (for logistic convenience in downloading/judging), I'd say that time limits should be thrown out the window when it comes to the full track.

After all, we're blathering about the "soul" of your music and what you love about it, right? As such, I don't think that a limit is very conducive to the spirit of the thing!

Then again, I'm not judging this particular contest, so that's just an opinion...

re: 'soul'

amazing how a slightly t-i-c comment can be blown up out of all proportion!

Personally, I'd rather hear your track at it's full, unpruned 4:12...

My background is a lot of three minute pop, but also concept albums (Tommy, Quadrophenia), and long-ass Sabbath and such with interesting arrangements.

The cross of these usually manifests itself as a pop song with mutiple 1-2 minute movements, which it then abandons instead of repeating...

Sort of like Boheimian Rhapsody (sorry Tugger) or side 2 of Abbey road, only not as good :hihi:

I mean, I could trim the intro, make it 4 bpm faster and gut the guitar solo...but why? Is dialup really a concern anymore? (Especially with the excerpt...)

SIDEBAR: I always hate how timelimits favor faster songs. You can just pack more into a 200bpm song than an 80 bpm song within a time limit...

...mind you, I could also just put together a short, concise song, but I've been doing that here for the better part of 3 years...again, the point is?

Hey I was just trying to be ironic. :) I know what you mean, and I'm in the same boat, but I have been able to truncate the piece to about 4 minutes pretty well. I do like the idea of leaving it bloated and providing the under 2 minute radio version. That will be interesting.

As much as I love a short pop gem, I do have an attention span and am up for the challenge of the longer format. I used to love it back in the day when radio would actually play that whole symphonic build-up to "Nights in White Satin" or the center section of "American Pie" and personally, though I really like early Dire Straits, I think that synthy intro was the best part of "Money for Nothing." :)

Now if I could just get untangled from all this family holiday insanity and get back to doing music...

Post

Since it has to be mentioned...

And since I'm always the one to do it... ;)

Do we need an alt contest for January? I'm not really sure if people are hard at work on their Winter contest entries, if they've given up, or if they've just had no time over the holidays.
