Then you didnt had the case where you need synth unison instead osc and i had enough to use that in combination with osc unison.Teksonik wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 8:12 pmI own DUNE 3 and yes it has Unison Voices along with Osc Unison but there's nothing it can do in regards to Unison that I can't achieve with Icarus 3.Lbdunequest wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 7:54 pm Unison per synth, not oscillator, because it gives different results. Dune and Icarus have significantly different character but that's subjective. I happen to like both for what they are and they are both in my top 5 most used synths.
Some people like to complain about what isn't while others happily take advantage of what is. It's not hard to guess who is more productive.
I've used several instances of Icarus 3 today all with pleasing unison in different variations so no problem here.

Ok whatever. I think you're just being pedantic. If the myriad of Unison options in Icarus 3 aren't enough then I guess you'll just have to move on. I'll just keep using it and enjoying all those options. You're the one who went off topic. The discussion here is about Icarus 3 as an instrument not some geek level argument about who copied what. Let me put it to you in a manner that is crystal clear. There's a pretty big difference between oscillator unison and actual voice unison, but I'm not going to play one against the other, both are great for what they do, but Icarus only offers oscillator unison, which is fine. More related to supersaw. Dune's unison is far more advanced, basically letting you make a fully different patch per note.Teksonik wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 8:12 pmI own DUNE 3 and yes it has Unison Voices along with Osc Unison but there's nothing it can do in regards to Unison that I can't achieve with Icarus 3.Lbdunequest wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 7:54 pm Unison per synth, not oscillator, because it gives different results. Icarus, which again, I love a lot, is not nearly the most powerful synthesizer available. While we're looking at Dune, Dune offers each oscillator as a mod source, which is crazy powerful. It offers a simple 3 op FM oscillator. Dune's got a more flexible effects chain system too.
But Icarus has all the different oscillator modifiers, which are awesome. Cool physical modeling filters. While not totally doing filter FM, there is the FM type filter, which is cool in it's own right.
Anyway, my point is, it is powerful in some ways, not as powerful in others. I think we can easily agree that it's in the upper echelon of powerful wavetable synths and call it a night. If you start bringing up true multi engine modular style synths like MPowerSynth, calling it the most powerful synth is a bit silly. I basically can't help but do an eye roll when hyperbolic marketing gets bandied about, especially when you have a great synth like Icarus that frankly doesn't need it. They should just use my quote in their marketing. "zerocrossing says it's great!"

Im not being pedantic, there can be all the posible options for oscillator but it will not be the same as proper unison because the interaction between components becomes different, resulting in a bit different sound. You are just being ignorant and self centered thats it. And you can use whatever you want i dont care, this thread is not about Teksonik.l, but about Icarus 3.Teksonik wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 11:55 pmOk whatever. I think you're just being pedantic. Hard to measure powerful or best. I think it's stupid to always be comparing as music and the tools to make it are subjective.
I will say I've got licenses or at least tried out most of the major vst instruments. And I feel Icarus is my go to "big vst synth"
For me I prefer the overall sound character to others. Also the gui is logical and clear for programing. So many oscillator and filter options, internal fx especially reverb excellent.
I'm sure there are people out there who prefer the sound and interface of say Massive X. Doesn't make me wrong or them wrong. It's just opinions
I've learnt to look past marketing talk (not just with software instruments) and judge things for myself

How would you compare the presets with say Spire or Avenger 2 ?discogsaddict wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 6:12 am Hard to measure powerful or best. I think it's stupid to always be comparing as music and the tools to make it are subjective.

I am not looking for a synth to start synthesis from scratch (Phase Plant and Twin 3 goes both above and beyond what I can ever dream of for that). But I am always interested by "inspiration starter" with good presets easily modifiable to my taste. Would you consider Icarus a good candidate for that ?

I'm probably not the best to ask on presets. I like to start from scratch and build my own collection.Jac459 wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 6:16 amHow would you compare the presets with say Spire or Avenger 2 ?discogsaddict wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 6:12 am Hard to measure powerful or best. I do use them when playing around or looking for ideas sometimes. I'd say Icarus has a very wide range of sounds. But mostly focused on dance/electronic music. Lots of trance leads and plucks, big dnb style basses, complex pads and atmospheres, sequences and arps are very clever, drums and drum loops, even vocals
You can try out the demo and see for yourself.
I haven't really looked if there are 3rd party preset banks for icarus. For a guess I'd say there won't be as many as say Spire since icarus is still under the radar of many people

Actually, if you say there is a demo I should maybe start from there (but it is dangerous of course he he).
