trying to get my head around a couple of concepts, am I right thinking the standalone and plugin versions are effectively the same feature-wise? So if I hosted the plugin in, say, Reaper then I could use the composer in exactky the same way (Reaper effectively just a wrapper)?

Yup. The standalone just add OS-specific I/O ins/outs to the project modular area, if I remember correctly. (And allows you to set them up -- you don't have that in the plugin.)

More explicitly -- if I open the same project in MuLab standalone and MuLab plugin, I might have two Audio Ins (1/2, 3/4) from my sound device plus a Midi In, with similar outputs, and it would look exactly the same if opened in the plugin, but with the Audio and Midi I/O being provided by host connections.

(Fun things to do: set MuLab standalone to use ReaRoute for ASIO, plus run JACK and VB Audio ASIO Bridge... It would be nice if Reaper had a virtual MIDI device, too...)

Does anyone knows if the developer is still alive? i bought the mulab plugin a while ago and no code arrived, no mail and no reply via mail and instagram.

Never had a prob with reaching out to MuLab. Keep in mind that first you will receive a temporary key (which works for quite a while) then after some time the personal key.

That might already be the reason... as those can take a while. The Initial User Key will work for quite a while though. Wouldnt worry too much here.

After purchasing a MuLab User Key via PayPal, PayPal shows a confirmation page with a link "Return to MuTools.com".
By clicking that link you can instantly grab your Initial User Key that you can use immediately.
Note however that this Initial User Key only remains valid for a limited time.
Some days after your purchase, and certainly before the Initial User Key becomes invalid, you'll also receive your Personal User Key via email.
Make sure you also enter your Personal User Key as that's the permanent one.
