Benn Jordan just released a review of Aphex Twin's tools for making music, and I'm stunned. Looks like his workflow is way out there, far away from anything I could have imagined.

What do you guys think if this? Are there any other modern programs out there to achieve what he's doing with the old ones? Or maybe other weird audio software that most of us have no idea about?

Most still exist:

CDP had an update to v8 last year - https://www.composersdesktop.com/
Metasynth is still available (alas Mac only) - https://uisoftware.com/metasynth/ (a combo of Izotope Iris, 2caudio Kaleidoscope and Photosounder could get you similar results, the latter of which also has some functionality of the Praat software mentioned in the video)
Playerpro is just a tracker so Renoise or similar (my tracker of choice is Jeskola Buzz) would get you a similar programming workflow

Most of the stuff mentioned in the video was pre- his move to an almost entirely hardware driven studio - of which you can see listed here: https://pitchfork.com/news/56630-aphex- ... -surfaces/

Mr. James used a dedicated computer hardware audio system by Symbolic Sound, the Kyma Capybara.

It can be heard all over Warp releases from the '90s.
eh?

LOL , the artists on early warp used off the shelf hardware like everyone else , certainly not Kyma .
ANd I bet you wouldn't even notice the difference between sound processed with kyma , CDP or supercollider .
IN all fairness , the Ben Jordan video is pretty accurate but nothing I didn't knew already .

If its obscure, abstruse, rare, unknown, esoteric or arcane Richard D. James will have claimed to have used it. If it wasnt any of those things, he will have claimed to have modified it until it was.

I personally am not overly convinced of that, or that there's a consistent level of engagement beyond 'messing with stuff.'
I have been far more impressed with such by work of some of his peers, even where, as with AT, Im not a fan.

(Of all the Twins out there, I prefer Cocteau and Gazelle.)

RDJ, never been known to tell huge lies about anything.

And yes, Musette and Drums.

All aphex threads are meant to finish in a traiwreck , that’s for sure .
About the lies of the stuff he used , people have to be as stupid as a rock to actually believe those things.
He was a young guy in his twenties taking a pisstake and ridiculing music magazines and those who read it , apparently only few knew it was ironie.
Remember roland mc909 armand van helden edition , lol ffs , sure he modified some things but who didn’t ?
This all changed with the release of Syro and also parenthood , the prankster died and the guy openend up , see gearlist syro which is true.
But you know the saying , once a liar always a liar , so people will still think he’s pulling stuff out of his behind .
Thing is , there is absolutely nothing special about the soft he then or now uses ,it has always been available to anyone who is interested in dsp and sounddesign and ofcourse the right forums .
