Presonus Studio One 6 - Hardware Synth Integration Question

I'm just getting back to using Studio One after a bit of hiatus where I hardly used it for years and have a question for more advanced users. I have a pretty large collection of hardware synths that I want to integrate into my S1 workflow and I've got them all configured as external instruments and ready to go. What I'm specifically interested in knowing is how to store MIDI CC names, patches, program changes, etc. for each synth the way I have them set up in Logic. If you're familiar with e.g., Cakewalk/Cubase "instrument definitions", then you know exactly what I'm looking for. I've been googling it, but everything I'm finding is very basic and mostly just explain how to set up an external instrument in the MIDI dialog box or how to use MIDI learn - not helpful at all for my purposes. But, I have found some information on "sound variations" and I think that might be putting me on the right track, but most of the explanations I'm finding are for orchestra keyswitching. Has anybody here done this in S1?

My reponse isn't of any help, but you aren't the only one that does this. I used Sonar, and created instrument definitions for all my synths. When Sonar went under, I really wanted to move to Studio One, but (at that time) they didn't support this functionality. I have no idea if they do now, but support for external hardware seemed to be very rudimentary in Studio One. I went with Cubase, which has strong support for external hardware.
Like I said, no help to you, but I'm always appreciative of other people who do this with their synths.

This is where S1 falls woefully short. It's been discussed for ages on the forums. The consensus is that S1 has issues with the MIDI layer that would make the the integration you see in Cakewalk or Cubase close to impossible.
What sound do dreams make when they die?

Thanks guys, that’s pretty much what I expected. I’m going to spend some time this weekend exploring sound variations and see if I can find a workaround. If not, it’s not a big deal, since Logic is still my main DAW and does what I need it to do, but it would be nice if Presonus acknowledged hardware users.

Storing MIDI CC names per device is easy - within the S1 interface (they all end up as knobs - simple synths and fx are easily controlled and you don't even need an editor)... not sure it remembers across songs. I usually just store a template with all that set up already.
I never use S1 to store patches or program changes - I just record separate tracks, so I've never bothered to even see how to do it, let alone store it.
Sound variations are generally intended for keyswitching in orchestral sample libraries, but perhaps they can be used for other things. I'll be interested to hear what you learn.
EDIT: I think you're on the right track. I remember seeing a video about the keyswitch type area and how you can do program changes with it. It's clunky.
A quick internet search turned up this: https://support.presonus.com/hc/en-us/a ... re-Devices
This line, to me, indicates a fundamental flaw in S1: " Because Studio One doesn't use MIDI directly...."
