Yamaha DX 11 midi problem

When using my DX 11 synth as a midi controller I can use the pitch and the mod wheels, but the aftertouch doesn't transmit. Also, is there any way I can use the data entry or the volume controls as midi controllers?

I've gone through the manual and the settings seem to be right.

Any help will be appreciated.

It's been a long time since I played with a DX11- if I remember transmitting AT's in the global menu, though. Same with volume and data slider- make sure what you're trying to control with them responds to cc#6 (the data slider) and cc#7 (the volume slider). Volume's usually hardwired to cc#7 on most synths and plugins, so you probably won't be able to change it...

Check the midi transmit data in the user manual. Could be another document just for the midi data details. See if after touch is transmitted there. Otherwise it might be only for the local sounds. Regards.

Many synths of that era did not have after touch and often played with fixed velocity of 110.
Midi parameter list will tell you more.

Double-check the setting of aftertouch in the Utility menu - option 6.
Get a midi message monitor (such as MidiOx) to view what is actually transmitted.

And where are you sending it to? Not all synths have aftertouch implemented.

Also there is channel aftertouch (one value for the whole channel) and polyphonic aftertouch (a value per note.) From the owner's manual I understand that it has implemented only channel aftertouch. If the receiving synth expects polyphonic aftertouch, then there's the issue.

According to the MIDI implementation chart at the end of the manual, the data of these sliders is transmitted as CC numbers 6 and 7. Then it is up to the receiving end to do something with it. You may need to convert it to another controller number in order to do something useful with it.

I am aware of the difference.
Those times they used conductive rubber switches like that of a casio calculator.
So a fixed velocity was used.
Many of those synths did not have a velocity function and after touch.
