What are your negative and positive thoughts on the music of Trance?

I echo some of the detailed criticism above, and it is my go-to genre to joke about, but considering I like other forms of electronic music, I think I'm a bit hypocritical. Probably a lot of what we like is based on what kind of experiences we had when we first started hearing it. I think I was eating a rotten glow stick when I first heard trance. Or it could've been Arby's.
I'm also probably incorrectly confusing trance with gaba and happy hardcore, which per Wikipedia are not forms of trance. So maybe just ignore this whole post, except the implied lesson not to eat at Arby's.

I've noticed that in this forum the trance producers (psy- included) tend to be the most obsessed with sounding exactly like existing tracks. They tend to have the strongest opinions about what sounds are commercially acceptable, and tend to attribute any deviations to user error or plugin/hardware quality.
I'm not sure how to square that with the number of subgenres: it's as though whenever someone succesfully creates a new trance track it becomes its own subgenre to clone.
I don't think there is much special about the trance genre that makes this inevitable. Psytrance has painted itself into a corner a bit with absurd loudness targets, but if some community is just willing to turn up their amplifiers a bit I don't see why a "dynamic psytrance" scene couldn't appear. Perhaps it already did?

Some years ago, when I tried to figure out what psytrance was, I came to the conclusion it was music with a fast kick-bass-bass-bass pattern rolling with a nice giddy-up to it--that was what defined it. But then for the psy part, it seems periodic zipper+formant-shift FX sounds are requisite--along with other FX sounds woven in. Never too melodic, but once in a while I hear a 4 note arpeggio here and there. I've seen Dash Glitch break from that kick-bass-bass-bass pattern, which throws my understanding up in the air.
How off am I?

Trance is great, but often done with computers or machines and hardly any life left for us.
I hate midi sequencing too, buy and use a real instrument played manually.

I don't have any posts from 2017. I was never a trance fan. I unironically hated it even before I learned the name of the genre back in 2006.seangm wrote: Tue Jun 04, 2024 1:22 pm Haha. In your earlier posts above from 2017 it seems like you were a Trance fan but apparently not anymore. What changed your opinion?
