I would say the Gen X Drug and Addiction culture was because of absent boomer (actual Baby Boomer) parents that decided having a cooperate work life and making money was more important than raising children. They had to fill the void somehow.

I mean mis-placing blame on single parents for being unhappy in various late-capitalist hellscapes is on topic here, as we also fight hard to avoid being honest about WHY companies like NI begin to suck when private equity attaches itself to them. Its a fundamental problem of capitalism - an inescapable core problem of a system that rewards sociopathy exploitation, crushes empathy and camaraderie, takes great ideas and hollows them out - but we like to look downstream at poor people and find a way to blame it on them, similarly how some try to blame customers for being dissatisfied with brands. Its a philosophy of blame and denial, so the people who dont want to change the system find a vulnerable target and place blame.
