Hi,
I'm just starting to build a collection of Sound Fonts and was hoping to get some recommendations.
So what is your favourite free Sound Font and where can i find it?
NB. I looked at the 'infinite list' post but that's seems to be more like links to libraries. I'm looking for individual recommended Sound Fonts.
Cheers,
Al

I'm pretty new to soundfonts too. The best free piano I've found is Splendid Grand (136MB).
Of course, I'm partial to my own Rhodes soundfont, jRhodes3.
I also like Greg Sullivan's Gigastudio files for Yamaha CP80 and Wurlitzer. They can be converted into soundfonts using CDXtract. However, his site has been going over bandwidth limits lately, so I'm contacting him about finding a better host for the soundfont files.

Jeux 1.4 -- pipe organ. Over 200 stops, IIRC. Pump its output through a reverb set to "Biblical proportions" for a properly cosmic sound. (Dry, it's naff.)
It's the third item from the bottom of this page. Not to be confused with "Jeux d'orgues."
Add some pipe organ to your next hip-hop number!

Gee, thanks Guido!
While they're not soundfonts, be sure to check out Guido's superb VSTi plugins at his site (soundfonts.it).

Yes! I also like the "Jeux D'Orgues 2" soundfont. It only has has about 16 stops, but the Plein Jeu and Tutti stops are wonderfully rich. King of the Orchestra, I'm sorry more modern music (apart from film scores) doesn't use these marvellous instruments.Meffy wrote:Jeux 1.4 -- pipe organ. Over 200 stops, IIRC. A couple to look out for are:
S J Orchestral - a nice orchestra set. Great French Horn sounds and lots of instruments.
Squidfont Orchestral - A large number of strings, but I have a feeling alot of these are out of tune (?? anyone have this and can verify ??).
There's some doubt over whether these 2 are 'free' in the conventional sense. No one seems to know quite where they came from, but they ended up in the public domain.

I just got through trying Jeux 1.4. I'm gonna have a hard time leaving this one alone. I might not see the sun for a while.

I like most of what has been named but I did not see the Hammersound synth 512. It's simple synhts but I find pretty useful and it's really small.
If you want some more unusual sounds you can check our own free soundfonts on our website.
