Windows 10-updates ending soon

Ok, I've resisted Windows 11 for some time. Now Windows is telling me support and updates will end for Window 10 in October. Where is the artistic community today on Windows 11. Have the problems I've heard about in the past been resolved. Thank you for you opinions and assistance.

I've just found the post "Windows 10 vs Windows 11 for music production & mixing". A lot of my questions were answered there, so it seems sort of inevitable that I will have to upgrade. Any additional insights are welcome!

Not experienced with Win10 but I upgraded from Win7 (also hardware) to Win11pro and have no problems. I did modify the install image, removed defender and some stuff nobody really needs, then modified Windows Updates via GPO to never run until I press button to run them.

October 2025. There's also talk of an additional 3 years of support, for a charge, to regular end users. This is already available for education and business licenses.

How old? Officially Windows 11 requires an 8th Gen Intel processor or later. If that's the case an i5 should run fine.

Even if it's not, provided your motherboard has so-called "TPM" support (Nearly everything after 2012) you can disable the processor check with a simple registry change, though Microsoft don't guarantee upgrades won't break things in that case (But it should be fine).

If it's older than this, and there's no TPM chip, then it'd require more modification to allow installing - which may increase chances of something breaking with an update.

I did it on my ancient i7 4770 desktop with no problem using method 2 (manually altering the ISO - quite easy, in essence it's using a Win10 installer to install Win11) using a 'legacy' BIOS and from memory (it was over a year ago) had no problem doing an 'in place' upgrade.

Have received all the updates etc so far with no problems.

They said that about Win7, and up until Dec last year, I was still getting notifications of updates (some security, some 'other stuff')

...or have I missed the point?

Anyway, bought a new PC with Win11. No probs except getting used to working differently with some things (that can get very annoying)

Its about the same as Win10. I used NTLite on the image, then copied into usb stick and used the the stick to install. You'll need another machine for this, download Win11Pro image from MS (if you have Pro license, and I think anyone being a bit serious about audio should have, you can use GPO etc. to control it much much more than Home version) and install NTLite.

As long as security updates keep coming I'll probably stay on 10.

Thingie refuses to update to 11 for my PC that fulfills the requirements list but doesn't say in which area it thinks it is lacking. I don't need this BS in my life. I know I can do some registry hacking but then why would I?

Updates for Windows 10 will end in October 2025, not October 2024.
Win11 is slow and bad.
It can be mitigated somewhat, but it's still slow and bad.

I've never had any issues whatsoever and it's by far the most stable OS I've used for making music. The one thing that is infuriating for audio folks when you first switch over is how hidden audio driver settings are. Here's a screenshot so you don't have to click on every single thing in System > Sound to find it. It doesn't even look like a UI control you'd click on:



Also, weirdly, a lot of legacy commands for the desktop are under right click > more options at the very bottom, for instance how I got to the file properties for the image I uploaded to strip the metadata

Not sure if you're aware, but there's a batch script/registry change you can run to restore the old W10 right-click menu, e.g;
