Vocal Compressor - Volume Independent

Isn't a compressor that lower the volume indipendently from the input just a fader?
I mean if you want to reduce the volume regardless the input, isn't equal to turning down the overal volume by the same ammount?

The idea is to reduce the dynamics of the vocal track while maintaining the overall original level.
I think it could be done with a couple of envelope followers and a traditional compressor.
Maybe another option would be to automate the threshold level.
Any idea is welcome.

Doesn't solve the problem if you use make-up gain or output gain to bring up (downward compression) signal back to the same average level before compression? So set and forget?pluginnow wrote: Sun Jun 23, 2024 6:05 pm The idea is to reduce the dynamics of the vocal track while maintaining the overall original level.

Right. However, in my application I don't have acess to the output bus level of the vocal track.Etienne1973 wrote: Sun Jun 23, 2024 8:03 pmDoesn't solve the problem if you use make-up gain or output gain to bring up (downward compression) signal back to the same average level before compression? Doesn't every compressor usually has a make-up or output level control?pluginnow wrote: Sun Jun 23, 2024 8:39 pmRight. Any compressor will do what you're looking for. The Waves ones I mentioned will do it the easiest and perhaps best. Xfer OTT is free and will also do MV2-style simultaneous up/down compression but MV2 is easier to get good results out of.

Use parallel compression...pluginnow wrote: Sun Jun 23, 2024 6:05 pm The idea is to reduce the dynamics of the vocal track while maintaining the overall original level.

Smash, bring up makeup gain, then roll-off mix to 65:35 or something.
Original signal with be identical, but low levels signals will become compressed.
Incidentally i've been toying with Flux Solera recently and it literally has a L.I.D (level independent detector) control, which is sort of what you're after.
The singles (Flux Pure Compressor) also have L.I.D.
L.I.D. (Level Independent Detector) (25)
Controls the amount of auto-threshold determined by the signal dynamics and the manual threshold value, providing processing of the audio signal independently of the sound level and instead in regards to the signal dynamic range.

Another option you could try:

Free AutomaticLite compressor by Reflex AcousticsReflex Acoustics wrote:There are no dials for threshold or make-up gain—because these are automatic. Thus the device stays configured and delivers a consistent dynamic signature, even as your material gets louder and quieter.
