Yowza, 1.8GB download of the trial - must be some fancy convolution?
There is a 10ms latency mode in the color plugin at least that limits the amount of wow from 36 cents to 6 cents. Not a great loss, too much starts to sound awfully corny anyway.

Analog tape color delivers the natural characteristics of tape, including an additional texture processor and convolver with impulse responses from a number of vintage devices. Delivers an impressive range of natural and supernatural sounds.

Ok well I just tried the demo for a little bit. I've only tried the tape color version, meaning the actual tape machine emulation.
Those of you expecting to be using this for bus duties will be sorely disappointed. It can do lo-fi and creative stuff very well but in my opinion this doesn't come anywhere near a realistic actual tape machine. It's got a very "synthetic" vibe to it, very smeared in a weird way. This doesn't negate the plugin as a useful creative tool but don't expect realism at all. No wonder the default preset is a super lo-fi, almost useless thing from the get-go.
The simplest analogy I can give is to compare this to very early versions of Pianoteq.. back when it sounded like a plastic and strange piano. This is the exact same thing here. It tries to look, smell and feel like tape but fails miserably at it.
I suspect the delay, chorus and flanger versions will be far more useful. Especially the delay will probably sound really strange and weird in a very positive way considering how unrealistic the treatment of transients is in the tape model.

Indeed, as I guessed the delay module is extremely pleasant sounding and very easy to make it sit in a mix. It has a similar vibe with it's smeared sound as Acustica Audio Lemon has (which is one of the easiest to mix delay plugins ever created). This is definitely the most impressive part of this suite so far.
Probably going to end up purchasing this for the delay alone.
I just wish it had a built in 4 band parametric equalizer so that we could combat some of the excessive darkness (and no, it's not dark in a realistic way.. just sounds filtered and anemic). When you do use an EQ before the plugin you can get some lovely textures out of it.

FWIW, Tape suite use an advanced tape modelisation and is not only suited toward Lo-Fi stuff. We haven't mimic a particular tape machine and prefered a parametric approach. We didn't aim at mastering in particular as other company already offer lots of stuff on this aspect but it should work pretty good. Speed of 1 is equivalent to 30 ips for example.

Hmm, it would probably have helped if you guys had used a few high-end real world machines as reference. For instance, it's 100% impossible to get your plugin to be really transparent.. which is not at all the case with real high end tape machines. My Telefunken M15A and the Revox B67 recreate the incoming audio way better than this plugin does at it's most "pristine" settings (when using the tape and tape head emulation parts. Naturally you could get it much more flat if you start disabling modules but then what's the point?).
You'll even find on youtube a lot of direct comparisons and even though the audio fidelity is a bit poor the general gist of how transparent tape can be is immediately obvious.
Because the installers are becoming so large, could you at least let the user choose their own plugin format during install? As it is now, the installer just defaults to installing all formats in one go. For me that means 3 unused formats taking unnecessary space.

The installer do allows you to choose which plugin format you install if you don't chose auto install in Portal.
Regarding the fidelity, I'll have to check with the person that did the DSP. Still disabling some module can make sense if you only want what you consider the good part of tape recording. no play head filtering but only the tape simulation for example.

this is a bit of a strange one innit, lol. it sounds like the model at its core is poorly biased and there is no way to bias it properly, or like what i would expect a really poor quality cassette deck to do. also, no matter how i tweak the tape colour, it's absolutely slaughtering the bottom end and top end at their extremes. i do like the way it saturates, or i can at least hear some potential in the way it reigns in transients is tape like, but it's definitely not there for the most part.
It sounds a bit like Chow Tape when you use "broken"settings or his Hysteresis plugin which i couldn't get to do anything of use, lol

I don't use UVI Portal as it's 100% broken for me.. has been so for more than a year and your support hasn't been able to figure it out. I use the individual installers for each product and I couldn't see any way to choose the plugins to be installed.. perhaps I missed a step?
