I can't afford anything pro, but I might dabble with some electronics kits for the cheap filters! (RC circuits, etc).
Even some of the junk at the toystore could be nice if circuit bent and sampled. I'm not sure where to start, though.
Baby toys? I've modified a couple of alphabet desks to, um, results. Way better off going to goodwill or yard sales to look for stuff that's been ridden hard and put up wet than to buy new stuff.

You generally don't learn a lot about electronics that way though. If you really want to understand synthesis, virtual modular is the way to start today.

Good suggestions above. Atari Punk Console is a great place to start. These ISD1820 based voice recorders are easy and fun to bend:

I can also recommend getting some piezo pickups and audio jacks. Very easy to assemble and super useful for sound experiments. Just solder the piezo's wires to the jack. You can put those parts in an enclosure (I use a mint tin with a hole for the jack) or not.

"Pro" is a relative term. Use what you have on hand!

I got a great deal on an MFB Tanzmaus. I used to have a 503 and loved the sound of that. People have been asking a lot of these recently, so I'm glad I could get one for just under the original retail price.

I'm putting together a smaller live rig that that can move around more easily. Probably based around this, Make Noise Trio, a small poly synth and sampler. Not sure which poly or sampler I will go with yet.

Just ordered one of these finally. TBH it's got around 10 more voices than I'm likely to actually use but I need a new toy and it will definitely get used. Just not that much for poly keyboard wizardry - plinky plonk with 1 finger is more my style :?

And then hopefully I'll order one of these tomorrow when I find out if they have one elsewhere in the country. Nothing like it in NZ anywhere I could find - the Behringer triple stands just seem to have disappeared. Might get 2 of them to organise Cat, Wasp, K2, TD3, MC202 might fit, Proton (when they're released :hyper: )

Well that's weird. The little destktop stand is 3X biggerer than a 16 voice giant synthesizer...who knew? :hihi:

Just a reminder, if you're having trouble finding a rack for your behringer desktop synths, Behringer sells rack ears for all of them. Then, you can put them into a standard 19" rack of whatever height you prefer. One benefit is not being limited to just 2 or 3 synths. You can stack them up as tall as you are, if you want to buy a tall enough rack. 8)

I have a sloped tabletop 19" rack that would hold up to 4 Behringer synths, or whatever rack gear I want to put in it. It works for me. :)

I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

I just bought a new music PC from Scan. It's really fast compared to my old laptop (also from Scan) and it's so nice having a 27" monitor after using 17" laptop screens for the last 20 years or so. Have spent the last 3-4 weeks re-installing and re-authorizing all my software ... but it'll be worth the effort once I'm finished setting things up. :)

Rack ears  ! Good call, I'd completely forgotten about that :dog:
I kinda discounted racks years ago - take up a lot of deskspace and I never liked having separate rack towers, as I find them fiddly to access. But I was thinking I need to reorganize and make myself a new desk. Already have desktop racks at the back with processing/patchbays etc, so I could make my own with more rack real estate. Would be nice to get the 2600 onto the desk also - I barely ever use it as it's out of range/reach in a corner.

It means a whole studio rebuild, but tbh it doesn't really work well as it is. Racks might be the way to go...hmmmmmm.

Not mine just pinched off the net but three of them lined up behind a mega key controller and some smart switching gear would get interesting pretty quickly

One could fill up a few racks with three different B synths in each for a relatively small outlay.
If collecting old analogues is out of your trust fund limit or retired dentist pension, or you just want to mess about with the synths your fave bands used instead of suping up your motor or golfing weekends away, it's nice to have options.

So much for not buying any gear for a while... I just grabbed a Djupviks Bunker Archaeology. I don't 100% understand what's going on with it, but after a few demos, I like the reverb sound even if I'm not likely to let the VCA side stutter as intensely as most of this video:

But I've been playing today with various ways of doing dropouts/breakups in sound in front of or behind a reverb and with the right material, dialing it in just so, it can be super nice. (RC-20 and Goodhertz Lossy are good for this, but so is regular tremolo.)

I kind of want some of their other modules too but I'll wait. Sleeper Awakes is the most likely one I'll go for, if I can find one already built:

Beepboop makes some ISD-chip based lo-fi samplers too but their demos are phone mic stuff so I can't tell how much is the module being lo-fi and how much it's the crap recording. :dog: In some of their stuff it sounds like it's heavily lowpassed to quiet down the exact noise that I want out of a slowed-down lo-fi sample. So I didn't go for it. Besides, Sleeper is cooler. :D
