Can anyone identify which synth workstation was used here ? Recorded sometime between 1988-1995.
( I know recording quality is bad, I think they recorded directly to cassette tape )

EDIT: the most interesting sounds are at times:

0:00 - 0:17
12:14 - 12:31
21:54 - 22:23

I've listened for a bit, but could not identify a synth.

I can tell it was a professional studio recording, but this is definitely a copy from cassette (which was recorded from a not top-notch record player)

Sounds like a Kawai K1 was used but it is hard to tell exactly because of the sound quality :)
You can get the free Kawai K1 vst here: https://www.nilsschneider.de/wp/nils-k1v/

Did KAWAI K1 have a built-in sequencer ?

lmgtfy
(which mentions external sequencers, which by deduction means: nope it did not, and also no arpeggiator)

But why are you asking?

Thanks. Good question. Because I'm thinking if they used Kawai K1 to sequence all those backing tracks, then they had to use external sequencer.

Why do the parts need to be sequenced? It's much easier to have them played 'live' by a keyboardist. Technically the music and melodies are not challenging. Occam's Razor says that if someone plays guitar, then someone else can play the keyboard.

Were there other instrument players in the group? I know it's a vocals group, but these need accompaniment. Vocal groups often had hired session musicians on their albums. American examples are Motown's Funk Brothers and in Memphis there was Booker T & the MG's appearing on many recordings without explicit credits.

But that still does not answer my question: why are you asking? Are you writing the liner notes of that album 40 years after the fact, or do you want to recreate these sounds as faithfully as humanly possible, or are you just in awe 'how can these heavenly sounds been made 40 years ago' ?

Unknown skill, these days, it seems.

I remember a comment by Tom Petty in the film Soundcity Studios when recording one of their biggest hits.
- we must have played that through at least 50 times until we got it right

or similar.

BAND PLAYING LIVE IN STUDIO!

Somebody makes a mistake, do it again!
- this is why daws have loop recording

Recommend that Soundcity film, by the way. Covers how things were done long ago and then ProTools started to appear etc. Paul McCartney turned up and they made a track etc.

Dave Grohl bought the old Neve mixing board, and made a soundtrack which I recommend as well. Really good.
