As far as Noisefloor goes, most of the older 'Emulations' are in fact using Noiseloops, which is also pretty noticeable. So there is nothing really 'emulated' there, some of the newer ones are certainly more sophisticated though.

I like noise/distortion. I like using it many ways, but especially dynamically similar to what bmanic has mentioned. I use it, along with other effect plugins like tape, to re-create a nostalgic feel with my own compositions/loops so something will sound more like a sample ripped from vinyl. Using noise by itself, whatever the source may be, won't get me there, but in conjunction with other stuff gets me a result that satisfies my aesthetic. Obviously YMMV.

Workflow-wise, if I want to mix a steady background noise this is best managed on a dedicated plugin or audio file with its own fader. I can't imagine who would find it more convenient to have this as some small knob on a random compressor or saturator that you inserted to do compression or saturation.
