Yes!!! That is very much down the correct road.
It will be a superb starting base for sure.

Thanks Vurt. I'll take a stab (pun? you decide) tomorrow.

HA!
I was just thinking of that sound/thread exactly and was surprised that that was the exact one.

Frequency shifter is your friend when making these kinds of anime sounds. Just record a knife used against some other metal thing to make a sword unsheath type of sound and then frequency shift it from low to high and it will add the anime feel to it

And a but of filter with envelope

Mix these.

An honorable achievement that has surely earned him entrance to the hallowed realm of Sto'Vo'Kor!

LOL I love this, it's a great illustration and reminder - sometimes the best choice for sound design is, in fact, just to fall back to a sampler after all

The last year I’ve been working on a sci-fi themed VR shoot-n-loot and I start each weapon sound with a sample and build from there. That said, we’re expanding our weapon types now so I’m not sure what to do for energy beam type weapons that don’t actually make sounds in real life. I’ll probably take little snippets of interesting noise and loop it under synthesis.
