The chosen synth should be free and freelay available. This would exclude DAW synths not available with the free version of your DAW. This should also apply to your chosen 'full 11 fx' plugin. All other plugins should follow normal rules.

by freeware we mean the synth should be freely available without financial cost to the user, so anyone can try it out. this does not exclude FOSS.BrainBeatMusic wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2024 1:07 am Sorry guys for this nitpicking rant but wanted to make sure we are all on the same page as to what is ok under the rules as stated.
So my understanding of the rules is you must only use 1 or 2 Freeware synth and or effects plugins which would mean ALL Open-source plugins would be prohibited as they are not propriety and so are released under a different licence.
I would say we are also by my logic at least you should be allowed to use a DAW synth but only those that are included in the free version of the software (assuming this exists).
If my understanding is incorrect, may I suggest that the rules be clarified as Freeware /= Free Opensource?
I would also think that any early access synths we have used are also ineligible to be used as they are or intended to be paid at some stage but we were given a licence for free. This may also make any pay-what-you-want plugins intelligible as well depending on if you see them as paid plugins that you chose to pay $0 for or the opposite where it is free and you chose to support the developer.
as regards the early access synths point - the question would be - is it still available for free, and will it be by the time this particular competition is over?
If you me and joe synthnewbie can genuinely pay $0 it can be considered free.

What do you mean by "chosen 'full 11 fx' plugin"?RichardSemper wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2024 7:18 am The chosen synth should be free and freelay available. In the rules it says "Never go full 11".

You have two options for this challenge:el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2024 10:14 amWhat do you mean by "chosen 'full 11 fx' plugin"?RichardSemper wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2024 7:18 am The chosen synth should be free and freelay available. In the rules it says "Never go full 11".
Option 1. Choose two freeware virtual synth plugins to make your track
Option 2. Choose one freeware virtual synth and one freeware fx plugin which may be used to the max (full 11)
In both cases additional free fx plugins may be used within normal OSC restrictions.

Just to clarify the language, "to go full 11" is an idiom meaning (in the context of OSC) to turn an effect up to its limits in a way that transforms the sound into something that is not recognizable as the audio output of the synth. "Never go full 11" is a way of saying that (normally) all effects should be used moderately, so that the sound of the synth remains recognizable.el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2024 10:14 am What do you mean by "chosen 'full 11 fx' plugin"?

Thanks! I think I have the gist of it. Essentially I could choose to swap one of two synths for using, for instance, Valhalla Supermassive as an all-out ambient wash, or use the normally forbidden modulation effects (Chorus, Phaser, Rotary etc.).FrogsInPants wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2024 3:11 pmJust to clarify the language, "to go full 11" is an idiom meaning (in the context of OSC) to turn an effect up to its limits in a way that transforms the sound into something that is not recognizable as the audio output of the synth. Does anyone who uses Surge on MacOS have this problem?

I've tried setting the Data folder to different locations, but I just can't seem to get a preset to save.

Reverb gets a free pass pretty much but otherwise yes. And really someone would have to care enough to complain which is rare.
Hope you take part.

Thanks for the clarification. I'd like to take part as I haven't done anything musical for a long time, and this month being free choice seems like it might be easier to get my mind around.empphryio wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2024 4:15 pm Reverb gets a free pass pretty much but otherwise yes. I have a simple idea, but I need to sort out this Surge issue first.

You might ask in the Surge discord. I don't have a mac.el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote: Wed Aug 07, 2024 11:14 amThanks for the clarification. yes, I believe so, as stated with the Surge XT. you may not use your own samples but you can use your own waveforms.] Peter:H [ wrote: Fri Aug 02, 2024 5:51 pm @Richard
Just for paranoias sake: If I choose to use Vital, am I allowed to use ...
a.) the Factory Samples coming with the Synth, for instance a sample called "River"
b.) the text-2-speech capability?
Thanks!

Thanks! Trying to minimise the time I spend online, so would rather avoid signing up elsewhere. Fortunately I have managed to sort out the problem, to some extent. Still not working as I'd expect and can't seem to get any clarity from the manual. But for the purposes of this challenge it should work. If not, It'll be a Podolski-Vital comboempphryio wrote: Wed Aug 07, 2024 12:29 pmYou might ask in the Surge discord.
