Hi, we’ve just released version 2 of Preparation, the physical modelling instrument that simulates the interactions of strings and bars colliding with objects, in the spirit of prepared piano.
For those familiar with the original version, Preparation 2 adds a fret object for the strings to collide with, bowing and side-chain audio, two LFOs, and an effects suite.
Preparation 2 Features
- Two physically modelled strings or bars collide with a rattle and dynamic fret
- Excite the strings using Pluck, Bow or Audio (sidechain input)
- Set string/bar properties: Sustain, Tone, Inharmonicity, Gain, Pan, Non-Linearity/Tuning
- Deep customisation of fret and rattle (Position, Gap, Mass, Stiffness, Edge...)
- Effects suite featuring EQ, compressor, tremolo, phaser, VCF, wah, distortion, drive, fuzz, delay and reverb
- Two LFOs to modulate rattle/fret properties or effects controls
- Keyboard and Velocity modulation for string and rattle properties
- Detailed pluck designer to set range and low/high sensitivity
- MIDI CC and integrations, MPE functionality for pluck and bow force, position and glide
- Attack/Boost/Release controls shape the sound’s level through time
- 160+ Presets plus control randomisation
You can find out more about Preparation 2 at https://physicalaudio.co.uk/products/preparation-2
Introductory pricing is set at £48/€48+VAT/$59, later rising to £79/€80+VAT/$99.
Existing Preparation version 1 license holders can email our support for a personal 50% off voucher for Preparation 2.

I made a sound demo of it
Tip: it's also on Plugin Alliance and you can use your codes for it

This is why I bought it: "MIDI CC and integrations, MPE functionality for pluck and bow force, position and glide"
The other improvements are pretty amazing as well. Even more impressive than what your blog post implied you were working on

It certainly has a well-organized UI and a distinctive, eclectic sound that would be great for ethnic and world music. I've heard a few different demos now with my headphones on and there is a lot of tonal detail that can be easily enhanced with the onboard effects. I can also see its potential for expressive playing when paired up with an MPE controller. That could be ideal for recording soundtracks for film or documentaries. It's a cool instrument!

I'm using a MacBook M1 Max with 48k sample rate and the CPU is always between 2 and 6%, so super low for a physical modeling synth.swilow11 wrote: Sat Aug 10, 2024 1:06 am Just picked this up, looking forward to playing with it. How is the CPU usage for anyone who's been using it?

Hi, if you download the Win version from the website, there is a README pdf. At the bottom is a not about old Win10 regarding a dynamic link to the Microsoft C++ runtime library. Did you make sure that you have a version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installed on your machine?BBFG# wrote: Sat Aug 10, 2024 4:00 pm Installed demo but it won't load and crashes in Bitwig5/Win10...

Yes, I followed the readme completely, including the inclusion of the necessary runtime being installed.cjwseven7 wrote: Sat Aug 10, 2024 4:27 pmHi, if you download the Win version from the website, there is a README pdf. Thank you. Yeah, I was surprised when I launched it- even high polyphony seems to be very efficient. Sounds nice too, I sense this will take me a while to understand though... easy to make atonal drones which is great thoughMillerSam wrote: Sat Aug 10, 2024 3:20 amI'm using a MacBook M1 Max with 48k sample rate and the CPU is always between 2 and 6%, so super low for a physical modeling synth.swilow11 wrote: Sat Aug 10, 2024 1:06 am Just picked this up, looking forward to playing with it.
