Don't think I've seen an actual topic on this, but I thought it might be interesting. Personally I've not sat next to someone to compose a piece of music with using a DAW. My Dad could play five instruments, and he heard what I had composed during the 1990s with the computers I had but as far as using a DAW together, it didn't happen. My musical ventures did go off in a few different directions but strictly speaking, my composing has always been a solo passion of mine with a computer and alone.

Alone, for that aspect of things, always. I can’t even imagine wanting to share DAW time, frankly. Other aspects of composition, practice, performance, recording, etc., sure. Just not that.

These days alone. Used to work with a band mate regularly.

The collaboration thing can be challenging. It's better when everyone is working on their own computer, passing files back and forth. Then you're almost remixing each other in real-time.

Another way that worked pretty well was to simply take turns and leave while the other person worked.

It works pretty well when one takes on the producer’s role and the other takes on the engineer’s role.

This is how I usually worked with my band mate. I acted as the producer. In the classic sense.

We got more done.

Never for composing, recording or mastering, sometimes for mixing.

Alone and together. We swap roles when the track needs it, I mostly engineer on the fly in the sessions and handle finalizing. Works great.

No wonder.

when mixing - alone, but if i'm working with someone to record and compose, i'll be handling the DAW but i have it up on the big screen TV so we can discuss and try out options etc. just works faster with me on the controls as i have the experience to move quickly while ideas are still fresh... mixing - i'm usually working alone and then sharing the pre-master mixes to approval, almost never do i have someone in my space while mixing. the few times i have, most people want to go somewhere else after the first 40-50 times i'm replaying the chorus or bridge... LOL

Alone these days. Have worked with other people in the past. Usually just one other at a time.
I prefer working alone, at my own pace.
