what's the longest you been working on for songs/eps/albums and what have you experienced during this time?

Twenty years...

If a song takes longer than 10-15 minutes to write it's not worth balls.
With that being said, the longest Ive worked on a song is 15 minutes and what I experienced during that time i don't remember.
I'm one of those that has to relearn the songs because I have no idea how anything came about. The whole writing process is like a possession by some other spirit.
Writing on the floor on top of a pentagram made of blood doesn’t help I suppose.

a song takes indeed 15 minutes to get its essence ... and then from some hours up to 20 years to be finished.

In my case it's not a song but a symphony. The basic structure works but I'm still struggling with the voicings and performance programming (especially the winds). A few chord bridges are also missing. It must sound and feel right.

If it takes hours to write a song you are over thinking things. Or you're being wanky on your instrument in which case it's self indulgent noise and it's not a song worth anything.

Regarding symphonies, they *are* songs with the difference that they have no hooks which throws any chance of getting laid out the window.

Post

It's not a song if nobody is singing. And I'm one of those who don't make music just to get laid.

So Axel F is not a song? Rise by Herb Alpert is not a song?

Felix Mendelssohn and Gustav Holst, the taiko group I used to perform in, and a quick search for "instrumental songs" would disagree.

The Wikipedia entry for "song" does mention semantic widening of the term making it inclusive of non-vocal songs.

Absurd, following this logic it's not a bong if no one is binging, and it's not a dong if no one is dinging.

If everything is a song then nothing is a song. The term has no meaning then.

Would you agree that phase=polarity based on the fact that the majority of musicians and audio engineers think this way? Does a statement become correct just because it's shared by the majority?
