I figure I've been lurking around this place long enough it's about time to put something up here. Maybe get some street cred, hopefully get some advice/criticism/abuse/monkey love...

Just one disclaimer... WE ARE NOT ENGINEERS! Some of our friends in Florida and Colorado are working on the engineering for us cause we just can't get that shiny pro sound.

That aside, we hope to put together some 12" mixes (aka. add drum loops to both ends) and shop them to some labels. Just wondering if anyone here thinks we should bother or go back to the drawing... um... key.. board. So without further ado:

Audioflux trance
Sickness

Audioflux breaks
Excess Bandwidth

Thanks for your comments, many wise folks on this board.

firstly welcome to KvR. I'm into breaks so back shortly with some feedback....

very good track, just the kind of thing I like listening to and wish I could make.

I'm listening to this fairly quietly so I can't really comment on the overall production although it sounds pretty cool to my ears.

My only real criticism is the kick drum. Personally I would vary the pattern some more and maybe consider changing the sample(s) used as it gets a little irritating.

Other than that, great track.

Yeah, my partner does all the drum work for our stuff. I keep telling him the kick sounds like a basketball. He shrugs it off and says it will get fixed in engineering. He was a rock drummer for quite some time so it's hard for me to get him away from "real" drum sounds. I do think it brings a rock energy to the track though. I'll just keep sticking MicroTonic under his nose...

By the way, I had a listen to some of your tracks. Very good stuff. Clean sound I would describe as progressive acid breaks. Selling any CDs?

Well, let me know if you're interested in doing some remixing. I'd be interested in remixing some of your stuff.

Two quite cool tracks you have here; lively and vibrant

One thing I wonder about though; listening to this I can't help getting the feeling a lot of stereo-widening and a tad of phasing went into the production; which on this system here sounds great, but will this still stand when played loud on a huge system?
I guess the mastering engineers will have their answers to this, but I just wondered here.

It'd be interesting to hear some remixes both ways between you and cypherone.

Welcome aboard the mental realms of kvr

Sickness: Quality sounds and production, but too repetitious for my taste. The same amount of material in half the time would be more interesting for me.

Mystahr:

Thanks, we do try to push the energy in our tracks. Funny you should mention because we don't do much in the way of stereo widening or phasing except with Ozone's stereo widening in the master channel. I am big on automating the panner on a note-by-note basis, though.

Yeah, Sickness was the first track we wrote and were still trying to follow many of the rules of psy trance. I like to think that hard Virus lead holds people's attention, but maybe too many people have a Virus C nowadays... Doesn't matter much, we do mostly breaks now.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, anyone know a trick to getting some sidechain compression going in Cubase SX 3? I think it would really help our kick vs. bass issues. We're PC-based so switching to Logic is out and Pro Tools just costs too much. I wish Steinberg would just pull their head out of their ass and add the feature already.

I think that's the holy grail to be honest mate.

Post

Well I thought there was some funky route-the-channels-through-energyXT-and-rewire-back-into-cubase type of trick somebody figured out. I swear if it's not in SX 4 I'm getting a Mac and some Logic.

Listening to Excess Bandwith....
The kick does sounds too flappy. It draws too much attention. But the track is just great. Full of energy and nice arppegios.
This is the kind of track I'd love to engineer and be there, in the studio, when it's created.

For me , it's more trance inducing and full of that dance energy than your 'trance' track. Strange eh ?

Post

Yeah, that is strange, but then I can see where Excess takes you on more of a head journey than Sickness so I guess it kinda makes sense. And yes, we are well aware of the kick issues in that song. Our man in Colorado sent us a preliminary mixdown with the kick totally replaced. It sounds much better.

So far from what I can tell everyone likes the songs (all technical issues aside), anyone just plain dislike the songs? Of course, I'm speaking to those who enjoy these genres.
