Mulling over a sub £750 acoustic dreadnought.

The contenders
Ibanez Artwood Vintage AVD11 Antique Natural £329 (thermo aged woods) Just come across this one, it has piqued my interest, £120 off RRP. It's discontinued but several retailers still have a few in stock, might be worth grabbing one. I have a feeling these guitars have been overlooked and could become sought after.

One review mentioned, they lack bass response. In several videos, they comes across as balanced, clear and articulate with good projection. I also find the aged look appealing.

Recording King RD-328 - £643 read reviews stating QC issues from Recording King
Recording King RD-318 - £471 - would my 2nd choice.
Alvarez MD60BG - £700> higher quality? would be my 1st choice

I've never paid more than £300 for a new guitar (electric). I appreciate more effort, skill and manual manpower is put into to acoustics, hence the higher prices than mass produced guitars.

MIM Martin's (HPL- high pressure laminate), Eastman, Yamaha and Sigma were also on the radar and whittled down.

I didn't know they have MIM martin's, interesting, I was wondering why they were so cheap. I would still
get the US one personally, though I've never seriously considered shelling out for one since my Gibson
is comparable enough.

In the past, Martin had Sigma Guitars made outside the States to compete with cheaper Yamaha imports.

Definitely I could see picking one up if I was like you and could DIY them well enough.
Sadly, I don't know shit about that and was even horrified at changing the bridge on
my brand new guitar without stripping the existing screw holes and whatnot.

I stick to the nicely crafted expensive stuff so far, though I definitely wouldn't mind
trying to build a nice warmoth or something (not inexpensive either). I do enjoy
woodworking, just not on stuff that's already put together.

beyond that, I probably have too many guitars as it is...

compelling video though, no doubt they are great guitars. :tu:

*Another factor for me is that I could liquidate my guitars pretty easily if I had to,
and get good money for them. I know a lotta guys who wouldn't be able to turn
down a good deal on them. When I moved, I had trouble giving away some inexpensive
guitars that were probably $600-ish new, seriously.

IME, you really need a solid wood top and back. Maybe you can get away with a laminated back on a smaller body like a parlor but definitely walk if you don’t see it say specifically that it has a solid top.

I grabbed the Warm Audio Tonehender from Uncle E and it may be my favorite fuzz next to the billy corgan muff. The original tone they included is super velcroey.

A Donner triple threat pedal and some more old battery-powered pedals for a rehearsal pedal board. And some kind of magic pedal that turns a sh1tty sounding rehearsal amp into a great one :ud: or maybe a celestial V30 speaker :D

I’ve tried a few Sigmas here they’re pretty good.
Altho the 12 string I tried was not impressed tbh.

But for me , for acoustics there’s 1 brand I’d always go to for quality & value for money and that’s Yamaha. I’ve got 2 FG models (i think).
Amazing for the price. I’d bet the higher end is incredible also.

I find Yamaha budget acoustics boomy, lacking in definition.
I have a beat up FG-401 (£40 used) it's not a patch on a Sigma DM-ST+(£140 like new), even with a new bone nut and saddle on the Yamaha.

Also, impressed with the Ibanez AAD50LG (even with a plastic nut and saddle, I've heard they're improved with bone replacements) it's really comfortable to play and sound OK, especially for the price.

An all solid venture might be a worthy purchase someday, sub £800, most probably a Recording King RD-318. Seen a decent review on Fender's all wood PD-220E Paramount Dreadnought, from a professional and respected musician, below.

Yamaha is ok, i dont like there super cheap starter guitars tho. I had a nice pretty affordable takamine that i liked a lot when i was younger.

Currently, I like Taylor, Gibson, Martin. I have
a Gibson acoustic and a baby taylor, both great guitars. Baby Taylor was $300 ish.
Pretty fun and handy guitar, but useless
for gigs and whatnot id guess.

Reminds me of my first "decent" guitar ,,, an Ibanez v280, bought in 1984. I still have it.

I wasn't planning on it, but GUP Tech was giving away a Phoenix drive (low to mod gain) for free, with the purchase of $260 or more (Canadian funds). Not sure if that offer is still going. In any case, I ordered their QueBec pedal (provides separate controls for Depth, or thump/resonance, and another for Presence), and their PORCorn (Orange Rockerverb Preamp), both of which are great. The Phoenix Drive is good generally speaking, but it really sings with high-gain amps, for which it was designed, I believe. I have a review on the PORCorn, listed today, and plan on doing reviews on the other two. I have that company's MWAK noise gate, and it is impressive, but not sure if I'll be reviewing it as there's not much to demo.

Got to play a new J&D S-style guitar @£68 wow!, they even get multi-point check before shipping - playability - electronics - visual checks. https://www.musicstore.com/en_GB/GBP/J- ... 014734-000

I'm shocked how well it plays and the build quality, the fretwork is perfect, the sound could be improved with better electronics, bone nut and bigger tremolo block. The pickups sound a bit thin.
A nice mod platform. It puts the higher priced Fazely guitars I've tried to shame.

I gave it a look over and the only issue (not an issues at this price) it has 2 pin prick sized white spots of undercoat coming through the black finish. No complaints, only praise. (Except not a fan of the headstock shape.)

I've played an acquaintances new £1200+ American Stratocaster that didn't play this good, and the action could be lowered some, the radius was set. This guitar is asking to be played. :hihi:
