That note from Disintegration was stuck in my head from the early 90s on. I still remember the moment I finished mounting a hi-wattage power amp in my car (a 1978 Ford Fiesta) and replaced the flimsy hat rack with a bulky DIYed baffle with decent hi-fi speakers, and then tested it by cranking up 'Plainsong'. Was happy that the chimes in the first seconds came out loud & crystal clear, and then after 30s my jaw dropped.
In hindsight I think it's partly the dynamics that the mix prevails, which is a wise decision for everything with dense and steady-state signals, and chimes and other high-frequency signals on the album like tambourine would cause severy distortion otherwise. But it's also partly the sonic structure of the mix. The vocals have their own space (quite dominant), kick & bass aren't that overly loud (in fact it's quite shy in the sub-bass region, except for 'Prayers for Rain' probably), (pick) bass is more 'click' than 'oomph', and the whole mix resembles the typical pink-noise curve (-3dB/oct) that was common at that time (these days a -4.5 to 5dB slope is more common). The highs are a bit rounded off, hihat is barely audible, making it quite mid-centric. Although the instrumentation and arrangement prevents the mids from becoming clogged. It was easier to achieve headroom with all this.

We didn't have streaming at that time, so we could never expect music to be equally 'loud' (except for radio), that's why we used a volume knob. But we also needed to memorize maps and phone numbers ourselves, so turning up volume probably wasn't a cognitive stunt ;)

Here is a sample plugin price list (TDM) from Waves in 1997. Not adjusted for inflation and not including the TDM hardware used to run them.

And here is a sample of what you got to look at.

And now for just $29.99.

The market changed. Back then, it was professionals who bought the software, now a large part of the market is hobbyists.

I remember that Waves was one of the company whose stuff was pirated the most, by the way. For the hobbyists back then who didn't want to pay a fortune for the software, yet wanted to drive a Ferrari like the "big guys". ;)

There was a Skinny Puppy album with a similar "this record is meant to be played loud" line in the liner notes. Too Dark Park maybe?

All software should tend towards zero in a free market, no?
El Juan was free for quite awhile (not anymore) and is simply great.

"This Record Is Designed To Be Played At Maximum Volume" on the cover of the SWANS COP LP in 1984.

And that is the reason why it is in my signature.
Strange then that almost every pop act for the last 15 years who are mastered to be loud, sound very good to those that go see them live at very loud levels. Strange then that the millions who go to clubs/raves or whatever they're called nowadays are very happy with that very loud electronic music that is mastered to be even louder and is pumped out on monstrous club systems. Even when I were a nipper that stuff was limited quite hard, and it sounded pretty good when the DJ cranked it up to 11. I think you'll find 99.7% of music audiences think loud=good and louder=betterer. Just sayin'.

I dunno, maybe you need a new signature

Cool story bro.

But my sig is better.
The loudness war is over, loudness has won

Post

The loudness war IS over, and 'genera-specific loudness' won. We're not going back to the days of rock music at -14 LUFs, and at the same time, most producers aren't pushing those tracks to -5 either, despite having the tools and skills to do so.

Push anything loud enough and eventually it just becomes a blaring square wave anyhow.

Indeed. Not a lot of respect to the OPs by staying on topic anymore. Thread hijacking used to be called out a lot more that it is now.

In conclusion, plugin deflation is due to loudness war. :ud:

If people had mastered their tracks correctly, the plugins market wouldn’t crash. Obviously.

Seriously, what the OP said is entirely true, but indeed I don’t see what to add about it. Plugins prices have lowered, yes.

Maybe I’d add only : how lucky are we today ! Dream tools everywhere for an affordable price :tu:

Good point. May also give some perspective to newer users who haven't lived through the early years.

Very few companies are raising their prices nowadays.

Vengeance slightly raised his expansions prices recently. They’re having more and more success now that Avenger 2 is here.
I don’t blame them. Success is sometimes brief. They’re trying. You’re free to follow.

And there is DiscoDSP also... same oldies, crazy higher prices now that they’ve added a bunch of goodies.
