Me still on a search for a guitar I can't afford but tell myself I need.

I'm fairly certain it will be the Sire S7 vintage (SSS) Not crazy about the color selection but I'm liking the vintagey moderate pup output more than other "S" style guitars on the market.

What's your fave strat?

A vintage type strat with low output pups, and then a super strat type, with a floyd rose.
In terms of category.

In terms of specific models, hmm.
I think an Ibanez RG for the super strat.
Then for the vintage, could be stewmac guitar, or something actually vintage. Not sure.

Reason why for the low output vintage strat is I like the sound.
Reason for the super strat is the versatility and fun of it.

I’d go for a used fender roadhouse strat or similar. Something with Tex Mex or upgraded pickups for that money. And the guitar would be worn in / dialed in a bit which I like .vintage style strats are noisy that’s always an issue IME.
I’d get a really nice Nashville Tele instead w Tex Mex pups

Floyd Roses are a mega-PITA to use imo.
Fender Tremelos are hard enough to setup.

Yup, you have to tune, tune, tune until it's right and then lock it in place. At which point you can pretty much beat on it for a month or so before it goes out.
I don't think there's any real shortcuts.

I’ve only had Ibanez GIO type Floating tremelos but even they were really annoying to try to float and balance for tuning and string changes.
I couldn’t be dealing with the setup time and all the tweaking of a proper Floyd Rose I’d have to send to a guitar tech for that. Also in a gig scenario I’ve had a lead guitarist break a string and then guitar = unplayable. Is this still the case ?

A month of stable tuning under a beating is a big “pro” to it though wasn’t aware of that. I have a heavy right hand hammer attack I’m always fine tuning when playing.

still keen to learn how to play that EVH style someday and make all those cool horse-whinnies harmonics etc.would love to play all that stuff.

Is there any other option for that other than a FR style locking Tremelo ?? Does that new EverTune system offer that somehow.. I’ve heard of the StayTrem system also.

I'm not really a strat guy but it would be cool to buy an early 80s Tokai Springy or Goldstar. Much more reasonably priced than an equivalent Fender, and notoriously competitive in quality. (Supposedly they were the driver for official MIJ strats...)

Heard great things about their ES335/ Larry Carlton endorsement.

Try tuning the strings in this order: 3, 4, 2, 5, 1, 6. With 1 being the high E.
I saw this method in a video once. No clue about the science behind it but it does help.

I use a cheap Floyd trem,
I'm happy with it

yah- if you break a string at a gig, it will take 15 mins to put a new one on,
needing nips,hex keys and the string

-so I just use mine in the studio (I don't play out anyway)

another option is a Bigsby one, never had one

I'm using the Super-Vee BladeRunner now. It's a work of art. Instead of pivoting on screws or studs like every other trem, it's a blade of metal that bends. Feels completely fluid. And when used with a well cut graphite nut and locking tuners, it stays in tune close to perfectly.

If you break a string with any floating trem the guitar goes out of tune. This is not specific to Floyd Roses. Always bring a backup if you gig with floating trems!

They can't keep up on production and almost no one is selling them used.

yah, the prior Floyd was on blades,
the blade pins took my Chinese replacement
The Samick's original cast iron came apart,
the lucky buy of the new one is more based on a mild steel,
not casting iron
The dimension of the blade pins is 2.5 mm wrong

-I wrote that about my Floyd's knives, but now I see u may be talking about bent metal.
I fail to see how it won't take so many actions without parting,
sounds wicked though

One with a hardtail. For all of the above reasons and then some.

Easy to say if don't need a tremolo arm of course. I'm glad I don't, guitars with them never felt right to play for me. Can't exactly say why.

As for pickups, I also like low output pickups. But I play some pretty quiet gigs in which noise is a problem. So I'd need something noise-canceling. Not sure exactly what I'd go for if I needed/wanted to buy a strat today. But those would be the first things I'd look for.

What kind of strat and why?
