Chords, scales, harmony, melody, etc.

> the music industry hadn't figured out the hit formula back then

BullShite. Formulistic industrial music production dates back at least as far as 1885:

And it's not that current music is more awful than other awful music of other decades. I had the same feeling at new years party 1992, thinking: there hardly was a proper hit song made past year.

In hindsight, that was solely the effect of me getting older.

well, "awful" is subjective.

but outside of my mp3 collection...
i listen only to college radio for about one hour every morning.
college radio has no adverts.

to me, wednesday mornings has the best hour.
the dj/host sounds like a pothead in his early twenties.
he seems "modern".
i'm not sure if those songs are from his music collection.
but i don't find them "awful".

There is always good and bad music being made, same is true for art and entertainment.
You got to dig deep to find the gems.

The music industry is more interested in whats going to make them the most money so we tend to see the main stream money makers getting the most press and advertisement.

What ever sells the most, gets the focus...

Doesn't mean no one is making good music.

Just like any art form, the percentage of excellent work is small, but it does exist.

I saw the thread title and the first thing that popped in to my mind was "Beato, or one of his C-tier disciples?"

The funny thing is that Beato does the same thing in his videos. The same simplistic content gets repeated over and over again. Because it works, just like a Max Martin production. There are no surprises, no experiments, nothing demanding, nothing deep.

First thing that is obvious of todays music is that you might have to wade through tons of music that can be distributed without being filtered first through a record company, a skilled producer or similar.
- it's easy peasy to throw something out there and equipment is cheap
- a lot of bedroom producers

If you find today's music awful you are looking in the wrong places.

EDM is first hand meant to be danced to in clubs or similar. Few have the melodies and quality of AVICII that can be listened to by itself.

There are plenty good song writers like Adele, some swedish songwriters like Miriam Bryant, Seinabo Sey and Robyn are incredible talents. Melodies that hold up and good performers.

Just as much good music today as when I grew up in the 60's. But all was filtered through record companies in those days so a lot of mediocre was never to be found.

One favorite lately was Rosanne Cash and album "the river & the thread". All played by session musician and feels really alive, compared to a lot of ITB stuff that I have on CD too which is good but lack something. When you hear people performing from a lifetime of musicianship it shows when brought together with good songs and an high ranked artist.

A fun thing that happened to me and my wife recently. We both have a deep relationship with music, she's more a Radiohead and I'm more of a Tribal Techno-guy, but we both detest modern pop / top 30 radio music.

Until we started to play around with the Just Dance game. Now, we just laugh at the music and take it for what it is. Mindless entertainment.

It is the taste, that produces the music, the consciousness. To find the diamonds, one has to dig thru alot of mud.

In summary, there was always wheat and chaff, but these days the chaff is in the shop window instead of the back of the shop, where it was back in the day.

Good Video, The Guy is on Top on many Points....

Yes, They make people like what they promote which is shit... They get used to the taste...

Another aspect is the overuse of FX in music making alot sound more like a string of cinematic soundFX with little regard to melody, chords, etc... In earlier days you could not lean on FX & the music had to prove itself standalone... Most nowadays if you remove all FX it sounds playskool...

There's a huge difference in repeating sh1t and repeating good content.
There are two kinds of people in the world. And you're not one of them.

I don't see a difference in quality when I think about Beato videos or Max Martin productions. If I consumed one example I've consumed them all (because it's always the same thing) and I don't feel the urge to ever come back. Both have nothing substantial to offer, at least for me.

Totally. I still can't believe we did that play at school. It's utterly mental, and really messed up
