Maybe I will take a look at audio production on Linux again in 20 years when it (hopefully) becomes on par with Windows 98 SE. But there is no doubt that it will take that long to reach that point. Reinventing the wheel as triangle or square is just not a good idea if you need something that rolls. Maybe then my USB mice will work with a polling rate higher than 1 Hz. That would be nice. But I have no hope when it comes to drivers for professional audio interfaces. No company bothers writing them and I can see why. It's just too much work for a nonexistent market. A waste of money and time.

But right now the big companies are what makes the mess worse. Namely Canonical which pushes lots of outright bad change on perfectly fine subsystems.WackyZoundz wrote: Mon Aug 26, 2024 8:22 pm Not going to happen as long as the Linux community focuses on reinventing the wheel over and over again. It needs a large company to create a (likely commercial) Linux version dedicated to multimedia production, effectively forcing standards onto developers. I doubt this is going to happen though as long as Windows and MacOS work.

I prefer Linux to stay like now rather than comes under the spotlight and become another Android! (Full of spy and greed).
As a desktop, it's great
I can do my work online, play enough good games on Steam and can make some music with Bitwig/Reaper and some excellent plugins from u-he, TAL and some others! This wasn't the case 20 years ago, so there is a good progress. I wish I could replace my Android OS with something functional and stable Linux. Maybe my next phone
As a desktop, it's great
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

Yeah, but then you can't claim that Linux is good for everyone. Every linux distro is a niche os. Simply not made for the masses.
This ignorance of the facts is why Linux at the desktop fails since many years. Step number one to fix a problem is to realize that the problem exists at all.
Instead everybody else is guilty. All desktop users are morons since they don't see how great Linux is, market is made of morons since it does not bend to the Linux rules, software developers are morons since they don't want to burn money at Linux, Windows and their users is made of morons because Windows, and everybody else who just looks like he is "against" Linux talks bs anyways. Flame permission granted. Now guess why this thread has become an echo chamber of Linux users mainly, like so many discussions about Linux before.
I am not against Linux. I am a Linux user. I'm a developer. And i wait since 25 years that the Linux problems at the desktop gets solved. Instead they introduce even more problems, more distros, more trouble. And more people defending even the biggest problems.
I don't have yet another 25 years to wait. I have a job to do. Now.
When this is your only argument then we don't have a base to talk with each other.c'mon, that sounds like total bs

The OP started this thread to ask the question, "Linux Users, What's You Distro Experience?". It stands to reason that its going to be an "echo chamber" of Linux users. It was never about whether Linux is a good or bad OS,it was about which distros you use or not,and why. Many of your points are valid,so why not start your own thread about Linux as an OS?Tiles wrote: Tue Aug 27, 2024 7:03 am Now guess why this thread has become an echo chamber of Linux users mainly, like so many discussions about Linux before.

True, but this is all ontopic still. The cluttered eco system and the masses of problems is my experience.

Yes,what you say is true, but it wont last. Like many things in life we can choose to see it as a good or bad thing. I see this period as the golden age of Linux. Already we see the big corporations moving in to control and monetize Linux. Enjoy it while you may.Tiles wrote: Tue Aug 27, 2024 9:14 am True, but this is all ontopic still. Same. I just don't have the time to compile new kernels on a weekly basis (at least) to fix the numerous issues Linux comes with. I'm not going to write a ton of tools just to be able to change things like the mouse polling rate or the gamma settings or have CPU temperature displayed (The available applets are obviously not an option, thanks to Cinnamon crashing every time when attempting to restart it after an update - hopefully that gets fixed in ten years or so). I'm not going to serve the OS, the OS is supposed to serve me so I can be productive. If I'm forced between programming my own OS and making music I choose the latter.Tiles wrote: Tue Aug 27, 2024 7:03 am I don't have yet another 25 years to wait. I have a job to do. Now.

Common sense says you should use OSX or Windows. Linux is not for you. If you can afford it go OSX.WackyZoundz wrote: Tue Aug 27, 2024 9:45 amSame. I would love to hear from Urs, ( U-he) how difficult it is to release Linux plugins on linux and hpe much it does cost him in labor and money.

For real though, it sounds like such nonsense to me.
If WackyZoundz is actually 'compiling new kernels on a weekly basis' in attempt to fix 'mouse polling' ... what??? I'm sorry, it just sounds like horse crap to me.
If you really want Linux support, go to a matrix channel or something for the distro in question.
In the meantime, here on KVR, you can ask me a question about pro audio and Linux, maybe?

Lol! So in this 15 page thread, two people can't make Linux run and obviously hate it with a passion. Many can make it run, and have happy running machines.
Hmmm, wonder where the problem lies?
BTW! No mouse, mouse pad, transfer rate problems...etc here?
