We are supper happy to announce the latest addition to the Darkpalace Studio plugin library, Chameleon!

Image

The whole Chameleon Suite consists of 4 plugin in a neat singular package:
  • Chameleon 1: 1st order Allpass filter
  • Chameleon 2: 2nd order Allpass filter
  • Chameleon N: Multi-instance 2nd order Allpass filters
  • Chameleon X: Flexible multi-instance 2nd order Allpass filters with a big set of creative controls
What is an Allpass filter?

Allpass is a type of filter that goes through every frequency without a change in volume. Instead, the change comes in phase! A 1st order will rotate the phase 180 degrees at the target frequency whereas a 2nd order will rotate the phase 360 degrees at the target frequency.

This opens up the door for a lot of creative mixing capabilities as well as creative opportunities!

Key Features of Chameleon:
  • A foundation for mixing: It's 2024 and a lot of DAWs still don't offer allpass filters out of the box for mixing, it's time we change that!
  • Seamless Integration: Should be compatible with all major digital audio workstations (DAWs) and comes in VST3. AU and CLAP.
  • Hardware Accelerated: Just like the other plugins, everything runs on OpenGL keeping more power available for your CPU to do the calculations whilst the GPU handles the drawing.
  • Highly Customizable: Configuration settings and themes are all highly customizable and easily done via the json files.

Nice !
I’ve wanted more control on all-pass filters for a long time, as it can do miracles when layering !

Awesome :tu:

Layering multiple allpass filters is exactly what Chameleon N and Chameleon X are all about. :tu:

Just a note, make sure all the config files in the public documents folder get updated. I had a little difficulty since the plugin would not display correctly after manually updating sloth, since the installer wont work on some systems. The installer for chameleon seems to work fine tho.

Anyway, cool stuff, just need to figure out what I can do with it.

Could really use a demo video and more sound examples.
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

Thank you for the hint. The sloth installer should be fixed since v1.0.2. Updating sloth to the latest version (1.1.1) should be worth the effort, as it introduces gain meters and a nice collection of themes.

thx I am using 1.1.1 :tu:

*pretty neat, especially once you get some modulation going. Makes for some interesting
harmonics. :tu:

Typical usage :

You’re layering a sub kick with a top kick.
But you can never really find the exact cut frequency between them.
There’s always something missing. That "thumb" you loved, or that "poom" you wanted more than all. Something gets wrong, no matter what you do, phase inversion, more eqs...
Then try an all-pass, that "zap" (when pushed to extreme) sound !
You now have millions of new possibilities to layer it right. Just find the right frequency and you have 99,99999% chance to get your thumb and poom back simply when the settings are right. There are even more chances that you get a better result than you thought if you keep on trying different settings.

Of courses, this is also appliable to that bassline that keeps on muddering your low synth at specific notes no matter what you do. An all-pass pass filter will do the trick, and at the right settings nobody will ever notice.

It would be cool if you could create delays and stuff with this, maybe in modular environment like Bitwig or MuLab. Tho I'm not sure how that would work, heh...

I did make a pretty interesting frog croaking sound with it, so far. Frog croack on the kick! :tu:

Well, maybe you already know this, but an all-pass filter is technically a delay : it slightly delays the high frequencies progressively down to the lows. This is why it "zaps".
So you’re basically proposing to create a delay from a delay : we’re entering the Matrix. :o

And it has frogs... :scared:

heh yea I dunno, I know you can use them to construct reverbs and whatnot. I did think it was
actually a filter tho. Never been able to figure out how to do the math part in Mulab or
similar for building stuff, even after looking at examples heh. I never really put any serious
effort into it tho, just looked and thought ok, im out...

*Basically a bunch of them were hooked together at various freq for both LR channels,
collectively they produced a reverb effect. I was unsure of how the freqs were determined
or how they were otherwise related, just by looking at it.

One thing that I like to use Chameleon on is on toms. Due to the frequency-dependent-delay, you can easily get very laser-sounding toms out of that, which is a really interesting effect.

So next would be ... Laser-Frogs? :D
