Legendary Owen finally unleashes his FM bass video. Taking it up to 12! Pure Hard Bass!!!
As I'm often left saying, in true Crocodile Aussie fashion "that's not a Donk!", not the case here, Gopniks be going crazy! eager for part 2!!!
P.S. It's been massively popular sound over the years, North England too. UK Bounce! Scouse! Various other names, with things like Bounce Heaven ripping off every song that's ever existed! with a donk added off course!
Edit: Wait for the switch! the true FM reveal!!!

FM8 is an amazing synth.

Apparently , there are still people who didn't know most fm synths are phase modulation .
Apparently they need a you tuber to inform them about that .
and wth is a donk bass ?

Oof. This has been the most obnoxious audio tutorial video I've seen so far. This guy is insufferable.

It isn't usually corrected because the most famous FM synth uses PM but was marketed as an FM synth. As of now most of us use the terms interchangeably which isn’t exact but covers most of the ground. You can view FM as containing a subset of PM functions under specific circumstances. The differences are going to be apparent to a programmer and FM is so hard to grok most people preset surf or look for easier to use synths that constrain the options so as to get musical results through a more intuitive process.

I wouldn’t say that FM (Yamaha style PM) is “hard to grok” as much as it’s presented poorly. Software is a bit better, but it didn’t click for me until I tried an iOS app called FM4. I watched a tutorial on FM in general and followed along with the app and all of the sudden it just clicked. I wouldn’t say that I can get to a sound that I’m after in the same way that I can with other forms of synthesis, but now I know how to properly explore.

It's one of the most intuitive and rewarding synthesis method's around .
If people need youtube tutorials instead of actually exploring it themsleves ,my conclusion is that they are either lazy or not the brightest bulb in town .
Might as well knit some socks .

That is well said. I think my “difficult to grok” comment is in part referencing the esoteric traditional DX7 interface and the fact it take a lot of time to be able think of a sound and just find it with FM synthesis unless we are dealing with simpler two operator types. I get some useful results with experimentation. The Korg Opsix though yields more predictable results.

My first time with a DX7 was a disaster. I probably should have RTFM, but I figured, “how hard could it be?”Scotty wrote: Thu Sep 05, 2024 11:28 pm That is well said. Yes only the intellectual elite should have access to FM synths. The rest of us should simply marvel in awe at your prowess.gentleclockdivider wrote: Thu Sep 05, 2024 2:44 pm It's one of the most intuitive and rewarding synthesis method's around .

FM synthesis is one the least intuitive forms of synthesis out there and watching a tutorial on it is perfectly reasonable. There is basically no reason at all for the human brain to understand what will emerge when one waveform modulates the phase or frequency of another and if that's really your claim, you're talking nonsense.

I also don't get why YT tutorials are automatically bad for learning FM synthesis but, yeah, there is a reason to understand what will emerge when one waveform modulates another: arithmetic. It's in Chowning's (written) tutorials among others. It's a different approach to synthesis most people don't really want to bother with as, to make it work you need to have a decent idea of the frequency profile of a sound and be prepared to do a few sums, but the sidebands are predictable.swilow11 wrote: Sat Sep 07, 2024 10:18 am There is basically no reason at all for the human brain to understand what will emerge when one waveform modulates the phase or frequency of another and if that's really your claim, you're talking nonsense.

Hogwash , your brain understands what will emerge when opening or closing a lowpassfilter , how come ?swilow11 wrote: Sat Sep 07, 2024 10:18 am There is basically no reason at all for the human brain to understand what will emerge when one waveform modulates the phase or frequency of another and if that's really your claim, you're talking nonsense.
Simple..the answer is experience and because you have done it probably a million times , same goes for sync sounds, pulse width modulation etc..
Same goes for Fm , I know more or less how a stack of 3 operators will sound given their ratios are harmonic integers , how feedback sounds in a 2-3 operator loop , becasue I did it a million times .
Things get exponentially more complex when ratios are non integer but the same can be said when dialing up a complex sound on a subtractive synth .
Yes the math behind fm is not easy , but FM really isn't and I still stand by the fact it is verry intuitive .
It's an opinion

Generally, I randomise all serum knobs, and just by looking at the knobs position, I can already hear the sound before it plays it.swilow11 wrote: Sat Sep 07, 2024 10:18 amYes only the intellectual elite should have access to FM synths. Simply because I did that 53 billion times and counting.
This way I am generally releasing world class bangers without even having an audio interface plugged in and having listened to them before. I just need to look at the spectrum and I know I nailed it.
Yet again.
If you can't do what I do, you should stop making music now.
