Hello, I'm new to music production. I know how to play piano and have a decent foundation of music theory. Looking for advice / resources for composing. I want to start off with trying to compose for piano and try orchestrating or at very least including other instruments (like strings or percussions).

I would also like to learn more about the thought process of writing cinematic / film score music as well. Currently I've been enjoying the soundtracks of Studio Ghibli films and a tv show, Lost.

My long term goal, I'd like to be able to compose pieces that evoke certain "feelings". The best way I can describe it would be filmscore. Given a context (or scene) music can make that context feel light hearted or upbeat, defeated, motivated, etc. Any resources would be great preferably books or video format.

May be an obvious suggestion, but Venus Theory (Youtuber/sound designer/composer dude) has a ton of content on cinematic composition and musical concepts in general. His more recent content is perhaps too philosophical for your particular goals (but generally still worth watching) but go back a few years and he has stuff ranging from sound design, drum synthesis, interesting musical concepts, and more general synthesiser tutorials. Good be a decent starting off point for you (if you don't already know him).

A side note, but he's got some great free Decent Sampler banks on offer, including a recent one where he samples the Polybrute 12 (ignited my GAS hard), and even a rough and ready cello bank.

Fwiw, this a topic that also interests me and I know very little so I will watch this thread. But I can definitely say that with this stuff, having a strong feel for how different scales/modes make YOU feel is hugely important. And I think the more negatively valenced emotions are usually the most rewarding and satisfying to wrangle into sound.

On YouTube you can find plenty of tutorials if you combine "MIDI" with "Classic composing" which should give you an idea about how to transcribe piano pieces to a full orchestra.

Thank you guys for the suggestions I shall look into them :)
