£119, is there any reason to not get this over an RD-9 if you were looking for a 909 machine and you don't mind it being modular ?

MS5 arrived pretty quickly. Haven't even had a chance to get it down to the studio yet, so only a quick fiddle around with it so far. First impressions - it's fkn heavy! Weighs almost the same as the UBXa next to it, which surprised me. All metal panels, ends etc. I just love the flip top thing.
Knobs are big and chunky but a tad wobbly, which is unusual for Behringer IMO. All the other ones are pretty solid, but it still feels like it's made out of recycled Centurion tanks.
It's a Dr Who synth. I immediately gravitated towards those kinda sounds. The modulation is far more extensive than I thought it would be, and just having 2 LFOs gives way more than the standard analogue. I've had Rolands before - still got a 106 and alphajuno lurking around broken that I can't be arsed to fix, had JXs before and access to Jupiters etc but hadn't realized how different the MS oldies were. Really juicy and squelchy filters, not aggro but very sweetspot for basses and big low sounds. Kinda dirty without being filthy. TBH it really shows up how budget the Juno filters were/are compared to what Roland did before. Way more character without being left-field but still that rubbery Roland character.
Beautiful pulse waves/PWM and can do great sucked lemon sounds. Lovely bass. The addition of the BPF means you can really finetune sounds - didn't expect to use it much but I think it'll be a great feature - the modulation destinations for it and the main filter really open up the possibilities.
Shitloads of back panel adjuster pots similar to the Monopoly - must try them at some point. You can adjust things like pulse width, all the usual filter frequencies, oscillators etc. Amazing what they throw in for the price. Love it - haven't got anything quite that character in the studio so it'll stand on its own merits definitely. More juice and character than the Monopoly IMO.

Nice. I’m partial to to the Roland sound. I’ve built my modular rig mostly around the System 100. Nice to hear that the MS5 is built heavy. Hopefully the wobbly knobs will stand up. I had a play at a Matriarch recently and the sliders and knobs didn’t scream quality. I’ve got a lot of Behringer in my studio. The stuff I’ve bought in the past 5 years has stood up.

This one's on my radar but nobody in NZ stocks the MS1 at all for some reason. I quite like my old MC202 for certain things but it's such a pita to progamme that I just don't use it any more, so a replacement would be nice. Quite a basic synth though. I saw another video for the mkii and the owner was quite unimpressed that some flaws from the mk1 were still unfixed. Portamento not working properly and not working at all on arps, amongst others. If it's ever stocked in NZ and remains cheap, I'll buy it - similar price to Wasp etc is OK IMO but not the next level up. Obvs it has a keyboard and costs more but under the hood it's on a par with the TD3.
I like the way Behringer do their emulations, some of them really close and superb value. But MS1 is one they could pimp a bit IMO. Add a drive or distortion similar to TD3s, something to make the 101 better than it was.

Which is why I'm excited about it. I love the 909, don't get me wrong, but the last thing that I want is a dedicated 909 for a drum machine. A 909 style modular sequencer with big chunky buttons in a square grid at low cost, I'll have two of those please!Digivolt wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2024 3:28 pmOh I didn't read the fine print that it's a sequencer only, thought it came with sounds toodb3 wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2024 3:25 pmSequencer only right? Twitter "Our PRO-16 synthesizer is currently in beta testing, and we’re working on creating presets that bring this incredible synth to life. With 16 analog voices and a polyphonic aftertouch keyboard, the PRO-16 not only captures the iconic sound of the original Prophet 5 but also introduces a host of new features and sound capabilities. The polyphonic aftertouch keyboard adds an unmatched level of expressiveness to your playing, making this synth a true powerhouse."

Appears to have separate stereo outputs for Hi and Lo. Nice!

Ok, well then, that might be a win for me. It looks a lot better than the oby clone and I much prefer the P5 architecture.

I see a fan. That will certainly concern some people.

Good point. It's the nicest looking of the 3. Also, I played a UB-Xa recently and hated it as much as I hate the real OB-Xa (go figure!).ghettosynth wrote: Fri Sep 27, 2024 6:36 pm Ok, well then, that might be a win for me. That's a good testament to its accuracy. OBXa used to always fail to impress me also. TBH I'm still very much on the fence about my UBXa - can't decide if I'm just being inflexible with the music I make and I should kick myself up the arse, or if I still dislike OBXa? I definitely can find uses for it nowadays, as I play some quite different styles of music to what I used to, but my mainstay is still aggro techno/acid bangers and dub. UBXa is far more useful for dub and will definitely get used, but with the aggro bangers it's still a bit lame TBH. It's the kind of synth you'd take home to meet mum, not have a kneetrembler with in a back alley. I think I don't regret buying it and I will get some use, but it's definitely not my greatest purchase by quite a long way. GAS mostly, I think. I just wanted a big toy. I'm pretty sure the Prophet sits in the same category for me so I'll have to resist the urge strongly.Uncle E wrote: Fri Sep 27, 2024 6:42 pm Good point. It's the nicest looking of the 3.
