Still nothing special out there for the most part. they are all pretty basic ampltiude quantizers that can be mimicked with a waveshaper. TAL DAC ,Plogue Chipcrusher, and this one; https://wavetracing.com/products/dq5010 are standouts though

Since this is a main problem with quite a few effects; isnt that a kind of digital dilemma.EfreetiSultan wrote: Wed Sep 11, 2024 12:55 pm Many bitcrusher sound "on top" of the Audio. It doesn't gel and sound natural.

Chipcrusher still a good go-to for this sort of thing.
Airwindows has a few interesting ones: DeRez is the basic version but Dark combines it with a weird dither algorithm that smooths the error without adding too much background noise. Both of these have a continuous "compensated drive" control rather than integer dit depth, so you can automate and fine-tune without stepping.

the logic stock bitcrusher is very handy, if you use logic ofcourse.

Bit loser is interesting ,I got it for free a while back but looks like it cost 10 dollars now.

I tried many, but Toneboosters BitJuggler is the best and most versatile for me.
Also the older Toneboosters Timemachine, which is free (BitJuggler is like a more advanced version of Timemachine). BitJuggler is not free, but the trial version can be used without any major limitations.

Would agree that Bitjuggler is the most fully featured I've found in a "traditional" bitcrusher package.
Sonic Charge Permut8 should be mentioned in any creative bitcrusher thread. Inear Regressif, free and still going strong. The slow clock rate parameter on igorski's Home Corrupter continues to be unduplicated.
Specific to mp3-type codec mangling, I picked up Zynaptiq Unchirp recently on sale (cleaning up archival audio) and I ran it in reverse for fun. Hard to justify Unchirp just for that purpose but it had better range and control compared to lese codec or wildergarden maim, empy, fish ... those are all free and decent already.

I am quite fond of the free cyberia by slowslicing. It's got a neat selection of different algorithms, some options for dithering with a filter section, and can treat left and right channel separately.

Airwindows DeRez3 sounds very nice, with a sound of its own. Otherwise TAL DAC if you want something more "period-correct".

I really like the bitcrushing modules in Arturia Coldfire, especially with modulated preLP filter. CPU heavy though... The free KHS bitcrushing sounds pretty wild when combined with the ring mod snapin.
The most recent update to Poloyverse Filterverse has a nice decimate filter that sounds super crisp and smooth at the same time...

If you use bitwig, their onboard bit crusher/ sample rate reducer is one of the more flexible ones. Any wave shaper can also get you lots of flavors of quantization (bit crushing) with the added benefit of full control over every level and the steps between them. I use Melda Mwaveshaper for this quite often, using the "curve editor" you can just pick "stair steps" for the curve shape and add however many discrete amplitudes you want. Lots of weird results can be had.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.
