This really is the truth. In addition, everyone and their dog can now write and publish to the internet. That can be a great thing, but now you have to dig deeper and sort more carefully. But it's all still there.holmer wrote: Sun Aug 25, 2024 7:19 am In summary, there was always wheat and chaff, but these days the chaff is in the shop window instead of the back of the shop, where it was back in the day.

Not even Rebecca Black?stoopicus wrote: Wed Aug 28, 2024 8:27 pm But that’s exactly the point. Bad pop today is simply “same as it ever was”. It never changes and is, if anything, improving over time - but thats a really low bar.
The ‘80s were no different. The ‘70s were even worse than the ‘80s too - nothing trumps “Muskrat Love” as terrible pop. Nothing. Not even T-Pain.

Seven a.m., waking up in the morning
Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal
Seein' everything, the time is goin'
Tickin' on and on, everybody's rushin'
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends (My friends)
Kickin' in the front seat
Sittin' in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?
It's Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin' down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah)
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin' forward to the weekend
7: 45, we're drivin' on the highway
Cruisin' so fast, I want time to fly
Fun, fun, think about fun
You know what it is
I got this, you got this
My friend is by my right, ay
I got this, you got this
Now you know it
Kickin' in the front seat
Sittin' in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?
It's Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin' down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah)
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin' forward to the weekend
Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
Today i-is Friday, Friday (Partyin')
We-we-we so excited
We so excited
We gonna have a ball today
Tomorrow is Saturday
And Sunday comes after wards
I don't want this weekend to end
It's Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin' down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah)
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin' forward to the weekend

Nice! I follow Numan too! I agree! What's cool about following him is how down to earth and normal he is. His whole team! He (or someone on his team) even posts about their health problems, like when Gemma gets sick. He knows how to keep his fan base up to date!stoopicus wrote: Fri Aug 30, 2024 9:14 pm I mean even the places people used to go are great sources of new music. For example, I follow Gary Numan and so now I know that Raven Numan has released some solo stuff that is really quite good alt-pop. YouTube simply suggested it. Thank you, algorithms
Sure, having Gary Numan as a dad is a big help (and he really did his kids a solid by getting them onstage early) but come on. It's not hard to find good new music.
(Gary's also still releasing stuff himself and it's excellent.)
And sure, this song may not be your thing, but compare it to Bunny D and Lady Tigra above and well let's just say I think the kids today are doing just fine.

Ah, my apologies. I didn't see your post when I posted Rebecca Black. This is what I think of when I think of exceptionally bad pop as well--especially the lyrics.bermudagold wrote: Sat Aug 31, 2024 1:00 amis there really a metric for taste when it comes to pop though?...the only requirement is catchy ear worm exuberant effervescence...for both of your examples, both miami bass and new jack swing were regional, authentic, grass roots groundswell sounds that just happened to crossover to pop...with many more serious/edgy examples...not the formulaic, derivative, turnkey music that literally treats culture and songwriting as caricatures like what I think of as the worst of records aimed at pop...stuff likestoopicus wrote: Fri Aug 30, 2024 9:49 pmHahahaha like I said, I don't even think they were *bad* compared to typical pop back then, which was way worse. And both of them went on to really solid DJ careers too.
A whole lot of pop was much, much worse (like, say, the vast majority of New Jack Swing). That song was in rotation on almost all pop stations I knew of and was on the Billboard charts. Stuff like that vastly dwarfed in number what most people today consider good music from the '80s.

Agreed! These days, no one would have signed bands like Romeo Void. I am so disgusted with big labels. Probably the only big label I'd ever sign to would be one that appreciates the art and talent--something like 4AD, with a mile long pedigree of valuing art and talent over looks. Luckily that won't ever be a problem for a talentless hack like me.bermudagold wrote: Wed Sep 18, 2024 2:58 am @Bunny_boy....no worries
for discussion two examples from current pop landscape
Dua Lipa...she was introduced to a Warner Music A&R by a trusted "tastemaker" in his personal circle..."she had nothing" yet in endeavors of music...he said he was willing to sign her before hearing any music at all because of her unique wardrobe, look, charisma, and "energy" when she first walked into the room he was in and commanded everyone's attention....so she debuts with ambassador deals signed for versace, yves st laurent, mulger, and puma
sabrina carpenter was another graduate from the disney kids' tv school, mentored by miley cyrus...her current hit "espresso" is apparently stitched from 4 spice loops, something AI could easily do now...it has deals with Alfred coffee, menotti's coffee, and blank street coffee supposedly before song was released...each deal is exclusive for a geographic region...sabrina posted on all socials for fans to post pics of themselves enjoying her signature coffees for all brands...same with her signature coffee ice cream flavor from Van Leeuwen ice cream
is this music as an artistic endeavor,...or an industrial factory designed for commodity marketing of consumer goods?

Oh she’s awful but Muskrat Love was on a different plane of bad. It was a love ballad for Furries. It is Peak Bad.audiojunkie wrote: Wed Sep 18, 2024 9:42 pmNot even Rebecca Black?stoopicus wrote: Wed Aug 28, 2024 8:27 pm But that’s exactly the point. Bad pop today is simply “same as it ever was”. Yes it's very clear that for you this is about not being doom and gloom. As opposed to just seeing what the facts are you have the opinion you want to reach and just find things that will help you reach that.

This might be unpopular, but, I don't think that Rebecca Black is terrible, at all. I'm not into her style of pop music, but it's not terrible. Now, to be clear, I'm not talking about Friday, which she didn't write. She was 13 and just wanted to try something. I really enjoyed watching this short video of her telling the story.
Most of us don't have to deal with our juvenile expressions being made public and promoted to the entire world. Props to the Rebecca Blacks and Vanilla Ice's of the world.
I'm pretty sure that she has more fans and follows than most of us, most likely more than the bottom 99% of KVR posters in terms of actually having a music career, if not all of us. Also, as much as I don't like the song above, I like it vastly more than about 99%, or more, of what I hear in the cafe.

Again, maybe more slowly this time, I do not disagree with your assessment of the charts, and never did.empphryio wrote: Wed Sep 18, 2024 11:51 pm Yes it's very clear that for you this is about not being doom and gloom. Uncoincidentally, 99% of what’s in the cafe is ambient electronic. Not even the people who make it want to listen to it.ghettosynth wrote: Thu Sep 19, 2024 3:33 am I like it vastly more than about 99%, or more, of what I hear in the cafe.
