I don't disagree one bit. It's got to be demoralizing. But there is a growing number that, while we feel bad for the demoralizing situation, see time after time where businesses have left people without the ability to use their purchased products. If there was a third-party escrow-type company that developers could work with that would provide perpetual keys for software after the business is gone, there would be little concern over challenge/response authentication. Challenge/response authentication has become quite seamless these days--some developers have even taken to calling their software "Serial number" or "Keyfile" authorization, because the rest of the process has become automatic. The problem is, that is quite deceptive, since the root of the problem is not resolved:

One should be able to take the software installer and serial/keyfile off of a backup drive and be able to install and authenticate the software on a new machine--even after the company is gone.

Once developers have figured out how to solve the above problem while still keeping the crackers from releasing it for free, then the problem will be solved. Like I said, most paying users don't mind the authentication, as long as it doesn't punish the honest more than the pirates. :)

I like the way Plogue does it, they email you a graphic file that has all your personal information on it

You simply drag and drop it into the plugin and it's authenticated

You could share it but then you would also be sharing all your info

If at some point in the future a server shutdown means I'm no longer able to use a 10 quid sampler I've used for a few years, I reckon I'll...

I just bought SampleTank 4 for a single dollar in a Humble Bundle currently going on. I figured there was no risk involved.

But at the same time, I would feel differently about a $190 purchase. I’d feel even worse if I had bought several expensive plugins from that company.

Is it really about the price? In my opinion it's more about does Amigo still work when load your project?

It's a potential distant future problem that involves them going out of business, not providing an auth-free version, and me then needing to update my system and not being able to re-auth. It's a once-only auth, not every time you open Amigo. For a tenner, yes, I'll live with that 'risk'.

I convert all to audio stems anyway, so it's not only distant and unlikely, it's moot, in my case.

I haven't gotten around to playing with this plugin yet. Does it support .rx2 files? That would be great. I don't have a "very good" plugin for using rex files.

Supported file types:

wav, mp3, aiff, flac, ogg, iff (amiga), .8svx (amiga) .raw (amiga)

Just keep in mind that Amigo is mono and limited to 32KHz.

That's probably more than the quality of most of the rex files I have anyway. This would all be for intentionally dirty sounding stuff anyway in my use cases.

I currently import things very clunkily into stylus so I can quickly audition them, then drop them into Kontakt when the time comes to actually chop things up. I should probably use the media bay in cubase (it auditions loops at the current project tempo doesn't it.

You know there's a whole bunch of buttons right above the waveform display in Media Bay that do stuff. Like turning off aligning the beats to tempo and the auto playback..
