just really catty comments. but really only ever at the very young customers, no risk taking on his part.
only one i really remember was him having a go at some guy buying one of fgth 12"s, he seemed jealous of their success imo.
i never dealt with him, as he was on the goth counter, at the time, i was over the other side, in the death metal section
although, he did also work in quiggins for a bit at one of the clothes stalls we bought hair dye (directions) from.

The problem with music industry is that it has been undead for about as long as it has existed, and like a vile abomination from a Tolkien book, it just keeps getting more rotten and better at being evil.
Pop and charts and "yoof tastes" are just some unfortunate collateral in the moral descent from already below zero for a class of rent seeking middleman businesses that has long become obsolete, after providing very little real value to begin with.

i feel like there's not enough good musical educators who teach facts and not bs propaganda.
even in manufacturing, there's not much freshness with the new instruments being built
and even if there was, the prices are just too high and so they cater to the trite rich self-aggrandizers
meanwhile, "lo-fi" is not a true full solution.
and then, of course, we have a surplus of "performers" instead of "musicians"
all that lip syncing and dancing is not really music is it?

Tbh reading that back, I came out very wide brush blanket like. I do acknowledge there was always small indie businesses in the business with pretty decent motives (as in all agency/trade types of business the goal is to connect those interested to consume with those interested to produce via the magic of marketing), albeit often badly thought out from a business point of view and even then often poorly executed.
The fact that the undead monstrosity I actually am talking about has become what it has, has poisoned the well to the point where these, what would in all other market verticals be disruptive underdogs and potentially successful, cannot really survive because the environment has been rendered toxic and liveable only for the abominable and undead.
Kinda like a proverbial Mordor to continue with my earlier analogy.
The sooner it all collapses in fire so that a new paradigm can raise from the ashes (I dream of a world of dozens of bandcamps competing
for artists, listeners and labels, and no majors or Spotifys) the better

I think you were completely right. There have always been islands of good labels in there but by and large crafted, manufactured hitmakers is an industry problem that has existed since the radio days and probably before that. And just as it was reaching the logical conclusions of the business model it had clung to, streaming arrived and the business landscape dramatically changed.
