Would anyone buy a new pc (Windows) for music production in 2024?

One of the biggest issues is the fan noise of pcs. You don't need that in music production.

Hmmm, if only people made silent and low-noise fans and components for PCs, and companies used them to make specialist audio systems. Couldnt ever happen though, the science is impossible.

are mostly intended for industrial purposes, or sometimes for vehicular installations.

A cheap way would probably be to build a pc in a fishtank and fill it with mineral oil, you wont hear shit...

The systems I bought from Scan for our studios 4 or 5 years ago are fanless, 100% silent, and only a couple of hundred more than a similarly spec'd gaming system. Here's the modern equivalent:

My own DAW system, now more than 10 years old, has a completely passive GPU fan and GPU, and the PSU runs passive 90% of the time. Despite being a 3.5Ghz CPU OC'd to beyond 4.8Ghz, it runs 2-3C cooler than the stock fan would. All fans are running at half speed or less; they're currently the only source of noise because of their age, but Im too lazy to replace, and they're still quieter than my Matrix1000.

here's the case our studio systems are in, its an interesting 'vertical' style. made by a company called Quiet PC, who've been around for about 15 years, AFAIK. Wonder if they've got opinions on how noisy PCs might not be.

Cool, the only really good fanless pc's I've encountered were rugged for field work, dust proof, water resistant etc. They were quite expensive. I've never looked at what scan offers as I would never consider paying anyone to build a custom pc for me, since that's something I enjoy.

*For me pc building is always chiefly about gaming of course, and I like fans actually.

Macs really don’t cost more. Particularly with the educational discount, which a) is so broad that just about anyone qualifies, and b) they don’t verify anyways. And if you are trading in an old Mac to Apple, it will likely be cheaper than a PC. Macs have a high resale/trade-in value, unlike PCs, which have next to none.

The only software I’ve lost on Mac are 3 old plugins that never saw VST3 or Apple Silicon. And I actually can still use the AU versions in native AS Studio One. I just generally don’t because they’re abandonware.
