No, I wouldn't buy a new Windows PC in 2024.
I also switched to Apple after more than 30 years with a PC, and the noise level is definitely a big issue. But the performance, especially for music production, is just outstanding on Macs.

Apparently there are also some well-known people who have switched to the Mac. Don (Sigalas?), the Youtuber who often makes videos for Steinberg, has also switched to the Mac (he also made a video about it).
I haven't seen the video with David yet, but I've seen some of David's other videos, all of which are quite good.
These are all (formerly) PC people who have always used current Windows PCs in their videos... but the current Macs with Apple Silicon are a real recommendation, especially for music production.

I would never consider paying anyone to build a custom pc for me, since that's something I enjoy.

Im not really that bothered about doing it any more, its all a bit noddy now, and its definitely no cheaper. And definitely not for work systems because warrant, though I still do hardware upgrades on some of those.
Reckon Ive probably built more than 40 systems by now, and probably upgraded or rebuilt at least another 50-60, including (SGI warrantied!) CPU replacement in a dozen SGI Octanes.
In fact, thinking about it, the only two systems of my own, bar laptops, that I havent built over the past 30 or so years were my original Pentium 75, and my current non-audio system (and I fitted GPU, second M2 and multiple SSDs in that one the day I got it.)

Macs really don’t cost more. Particularly with the educational discount, which a) is so broad that just about anyone qualifies, and b) they don’t verify anyways. And if you are trading in an old Mac to Apple, it will likely be cheaper than a PC. Macs have a high resale/trade-in value, unlike PCs, which have next to none.

The only software I’ve lost on Mac are 3 old plugins that never saw VST3 or Apple Silicon. And I actually can still use the AU versions in native AS Studio One. I just generally don’t because they’re abandonware.

I believe this is all false, but have fun. I used to be an Apple evangelist, but they stopped making machines that suite my needs that are not idiotically expensive. Forums are littered with threads about Apple incompatibility issues and have been since their move away from Motorola.

The saga will continue in 5 years, when Apple switches up their chip designs (again) and we have to see all the threads whining about how slow developers are on getting compatibility dealt with.

I’ve got an iMac, Mac Mini, several old MacBooks, Apple TV, iPhone, iPad Pro, HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple Watch Ultra (which evidently isn’t smart enough to know the difference between me falling while wearing it and my cat knocking it off my nightstand while I’m showering, causing EMTs to break into my house to save me. (True story! ) That doesn’t count my wife and daughter’s Apple devices. So, I think Apple has enough of my money, and I generally feel like they are built well, though the UX is terrible compared to what it used to be. It’s just not anything I feel is good for actual audio production. When I’m on a time crunch for a project, I can’t be bothered with Apple’s business model. I’ve been using an old UAD Apollo FireWire model for years. I just move my PCIe card from machine to machine. I’d have to buy a totally new interface if I went to Apple for no reason. The Apollo works great.

I’m not suggesting anyone abandon their Apple stuff. If it works for you, that’s great. If I needed portability, I’d most likely buy a MacBook. These are all just tools.

I ran into a lot of issues when they moved away from Motorola. It forced me to stick with a G5 for longer than I should have. When I crossed over, I found that almost all the anti PC rhetoric was false or out of date. Then they basically abandoned towers which meant less choice for customization.

Anyway, the fan in my PC is silent, for all intents and purposes. I spent money on a good one. Is there anything that Apple makes that would offer me better specs for less? Not last time I checked, which I admit was a long time ago.

Your information is outdated.

Check out the current situation with Apple Silicon. Apple now designs and manufactures their own CPUs that suite their needs, instead of being captive to Intel Xeons and their design flaws and perpetual shortages. The result is cheaper, more powerful Macs that run cool and silent.

That upheaval is all behind Apple now, and the way Apple handled the transition was minimally disruptive. Apple designed a 21st century CPU that will carry them far into the future, and it’s smooth sailing from here on out.

Intel and Microsoft are still facing the inevitable. Will they be able to handle it as well as Apple has? Or at all?

ive been thinking about a mac mini, if i can get one with appropriate storage and ram and
whatnot. 250 gb aint gonna cut it for me. i havent looked into them tho.

The rumors are that the new Mac mini should ship in October,and will be as small as an Apple tv media player. It is said to ship with 16GB minimum ram. If the price is the same as the current Mac mini then I think I might get one to replace my PC desktop which broke down today.

About the prices... it depends! David in the video bought a $6000 Mac Studio, I mean a 4TB SSD and the big 24-core CPU and probably 64GB RAM.
Such a small Mac Mini M2 costs less than 600€ in the basic version (I don't know the dollar prices or with educational discount). Of course, you also need a hub for more ports and an external SSD, say 2TB, for a total of €800. But this is a whisper-quiet, rock solid computer, ideal for larger music projects. You can't do that with a PC! To make a PC quiet, you have to do a lot of tinkering (water cooling, acoustic isolation, silent components, etc.). Then there are the well-known problems David mentioned with external hardware, especially USB, which isn't always very reliable.

As I said... I would never buy a Windows PC at the moment. My Mac Mini M2 is a dream. What would I do differently now? If I were to buy now, I would wait for the M4, which will probably be out in 1-2 months. Oh yeah, and I would probably get an external NVMe, which is insanely fast.
