fanless pc's are not actually expensive.

I find it kinda amusing that the fanbois have glommed onto 'fanless' (as the new "Most Wonderful Thing Evar That Apple Completely Invented And PCs Never Had, Honest" for this year.)

Especially where it is not true, most Apple computers have fans (I mean the Macbook Air is fanless) Even the small Mac Mini has a fan, but it runs very slowly (about 1300 RPM).whyterabbyt wrote: Sat Sep 21, 2024 9:44 am

However, there are many Mini PCs that are passively cooled and have no fans. Hence the question of whether it is a passively cooled desktop PC or a Mini PC. You can't compare a Mini PC with an i7-4500U or Celeron N5105 etc, for example, with an M2 8 Core... the difference is like night and day in terms of performance.
Slow-running and large fans are almost always very quiet. The idea that fanless computers are the most wonderful thing is nonsense. This was already known 10 years ago when huge heat sinks with heat pipes and large fans became more and more popular..

Errr.... the i7-4500 was released 11 years ago. I had a very quick google amd a mini PC with a decent AMD Ryzen chip, that is faster than an Apple M2, can be bought for £399 (475.50 Euro). https://www.geekom.co.uk/geekom-a5-mini-pc?gad_source=1 It says it has a "whisper quiet fan". CPU comparisons are always difficult... the 5825U is worse in single core performance than the small M2 8 core, in overall performance the 5825U is slightly better. And this is the smallest M2 CPU! But compared to the M2 Pro 12 Core, the AMD has no chance... and the Mac Mini Pro is also "noiseless". In my opinion, Apple Silicon is currently pretty much without competition, with the exception of the Snapdragon Elite from Qualcomm. But I honestly don't know anything about Windows on Arm, especially when it comes to music production.

Not sure how the thread got to "fanless PC", but the first post in the thread is about a Mac Studio which does have a fan. Personally, based on what I have read, I would be quite happy with the new M4 Mac Mini,256GB SSD and 16GB due out in October, which is said to be its base configuation. I think the Mini M4 will be an outstanding computer. Probably a slightly different design and yes, if the rumors are true also with 16 GB in the basic version. If the cooling concept remains the same and again with a slow-running fan (approx. 1300 RPM) then the Mini M4 will be just as “inaudible” that many think it would be fanless
