Before Kickstarter, I pre-ordered what seemed like a perfect piece of gear for me. (Looperlative LP-1) The developer had experience (worked for EMU, I believe... maybe) so I had confidence. He was active in an online music forum. (email list!) I specifically contacted him directly to make sure the device did exactly what I needed it to do (MIDI clock sync), and he assured me that it did.

It did not. At first I thought it was user error, but no. The developer finally responded to my bug request and admitted that he had not tested the feature at all. He assured me it would get fixed. I waited for 3 months and finally gave up and he agreed to take it back and refund my money. That was the last time I ever paid money for something that hadn't been realized yet. I don't think these are bad people, but they are bad at business and bad at estimating the problems that could up during product development.

My advice: do not ever back a Kickstarter campaign, unless you're cool with never seeing anything come of it.

I just looked over my Kickstarter history...

I backed 4 pieces of music gear and the Loom was the only failure.

I backed 6 books, 2 card games, and 7 other physical objects and they all were eventually shipped.

I backed 13 computer games, and 11 of them shipped in some form. The quality of those 11 varied from "kind of a neat toy but meh" to completely awesome.

I backed 3 albums and they all were successfully released.

Not a bad record really. But I was looking forward to the Loom and this is a disappointment for sure. Now I need to consider other options for MPE.

I hope Loom is saved, but what is Omega? Was that another, separate Kickstarter project or was the money from the Loom siphoned into that as well?

I also backed the Erae 2, thinking I would compare the two, when I had both and see which one I preferred, but now I hope I get the E2, at least.
Loom looks to have a form factor that I would prefer and seemed like a cheaper alternative to Haken Continuum Mini.

Unfortunate that they felt the need to tie this to software. I'm sure most people just wanted the hardware.

The Anyma Omega is an upcoming MPE hardware synthesizer that started its campaign before the Loo(o)m. The keyboard variant has a ribbon strip controller that directly inspired the Loo(o)m campaign.

Ok, thanks for the info.

So Aodyo has been bought and the development of the Loom controller is resumed. Woohoo! Very surprising and welcome news.

Great news, but the link is only pointing to the old campaign… I would love to jump on a 3-octave Loom…

Post

Yep, but it has updates with new info about the situation, but they are moving the discussion over to discord, for org. backers.

The 2-octave version was about ready for production, so that will come first apparently and then the 3oct, which was what I backed.

Oh well, I had written it off, but even if I have to wait longer, I'll be happy when it comes. When I look at the specs again now, it will be great if the new owners succeeds bringing this out.
