I'm kind of excited about this:
I've been using Cockos Reaper for a long time now, but I just can't get into it's MIDI without hassles, but I love it's audio.
Meanwhile, I like FL Studio's step editor, but I'm not ready to pay to release the demo.
But what I just realised tonight is that you can use LMMS's "Beat+Bassline Editor" as a destination for dragged WAV files from it's file browser (built in). This means that you can build tracks like FL Studio's step editor using WAV files as samples whether loops or one-shots. Furthermore, you can open up a single beat in the piano roll to transpose the pitch!
This finally sets me a bit free compared to before. LMMS is free, and it comes with or can be used with ZynAddSubFX.
Also, you can set the MIDI input to your USB MIDI keyboard to record in some riffs (no countdown). While it's not as sophisticated as FL Studio, it's still got promise for people who want to work with samples primarily.
One of the best features is that you just click on the WAV file within LMMS's built-in file browser, and it plays the audio so you can hear what you are doing. FL Studio has that feature too of course, and Reaper has something slightly like that yet more complex.
This video might help you out:
I don't have FeSTige, since I'm using Yabridge, but I will try that out later.
In the meantime, it's really nice to have some more options for Linux.
Peace. I hope this is helpful even if it's OLD NEWS for somebody else.
At the very least, it could function a bit better than Hydrogen since you have floating point WAV render output and maybe better gain staging.
Peace.
