...alright, so now you're pushing me, hehehe!
...I've updated my track to separate more clearly between the "clarinet" sound and gave it a tiny bit of automation on Ring Modulation and Filter Cutoff.

... haha ... button pushed ... but a problem with emulating a reed instrument I feel is that after getting the right sound/timbre/control, is that the attack phase is a very fine balance between the sound sounding like a hit (eg keys etc) versus a blow (eg flute, panpipe etc). Two fast, it's a hit, too slow and it is not well defined enough. Then you have to think about how tonguing works as well for shorter faster attack notes, all tricky, IMO.
Definitely some fine noodling! Also, it is clear that backing instruments can play havoc if not better controlled. Clarinet has a big range, especially if you include the bass clarinet as a member of the family! Saxes are a little different in that the various instruments have more overlap of their ranges, and as I said before the very low ranges tend to sound less "reedy". Lots of tricks to get extra notes at the top of the ranges, some odd key combinations and overblowing can get some very high notes indeed out of an alto.
This has been fun, and certainly helped me bash the track into some reasonable shape for final submission. So thanks once again - and also those over on the Discord for their comments. This is what OSC is about, learning, honing skills , taking advice etc.

You've done wonderfully, dB! It has become quite proper an entry and your seasoned qualities come through clearly now!
Well, yeah, one can go nuts with any instrument and its details, so easy to forget what a simplified synth this is and how much one has to compromise, if one was after a specific, real life instrument. But then it can sound so good. I'm amazed at the quality of all tracks I've listened to thus far. It'll be a round to remember, I believe. I've missed a heck of a lot of rounds, though... soooo ... what do I know, hahaha!
At the end it's about enjoying the music you make or the making of the music, eh... it very, if not most often, is rather the latter to me.
I've really enjoyed making this tiny doodle up there, too, and I loved making my submission track. Too much fun!
... I sincerely hope you've enjoyed making yours, too.
Did you catch some fish, btw?

I like that! Reminds me of Lyle Mays with the Pat Metheny Group.Taron wrote: Tue Sep 24, 2024 2:31 pm
Alright, here are two clarinet experiments. One I actually happened to have made early on, but well... I slightly adjusted it. The version 02 is totally from scratch again and also not half bad.

No idea how well it would work with the rest, but I had to start playing around a bit...("put my money where my mouth's at"...or what's a proper saying?!)
And here's a little demo (terribly played, but well)... Interesting to work with the pitch bending, though.

Yes, I did, in a couple of hours I caught one 7lb common carp and one 6lb mirror carp. Both took about 5 minutes to play in as I only use very light breaking strain line on my hook trace. Both beautiful fish which were returned to the water very quickly. I use very small barbless hooks too, smaller gauge than the needle I use to do my finger prick glucose tests.
Still waiting for "the big one", but I'm sure it'll be the one that got away, as in all fishing stories!

Awesome track. I like it. One comment though, the heavy panning and kick ducking makes the piece quite hard on my ears when using headphones so I have to reach for the volume knob. It would be much easier on my ears with maybe 3-6 db less ducking or a more symmetric quarter note ducking or maybe a slower attach/release.gethiox wrote: Tue Sep 24, 2024 3:59 pm Henlo everyone!

Have I read it correctly elsewhere that you can get away with using a bitcrusher?

But also external bit crushers are explicitly covered in the rule on distortion.
"Distortion: Please use distortion / tape saturation / bit crushing sparingly. Use your best judgement. Try to keep the original sound recognizable. Note that this does not apply if the distortion is built in to the synth."
