Waldorf MicroWave as a plugin?

Sure it is. Korg, Yamaha, Roland and now Waldorf are all making advances in the software realm of our industry. We’ve never had proper software emulations or exact models up until now.
If you use hardware, you’re aware that most of the technology is based on the original designs. For example the Roland Fantom while it does include newer features, it’s all based on older technology.
Waldorfs Iridium while it does have new synthesis technology much of it, stems from their older designs.
Going the software route, now gives them another run at success while adding new functionality and features. Like their newest Microwave plugin.
The Yamaha Montage M plug-in I own, while it does offer new technology, it still uses their core elements to make their new product.

These guys are doing exactly what they should be doing ! As I’ve said before, I hope they bring out everything they’ve ever done in software. I don’t have the room to have 50 synths. I prefer the option in a plugin format.
They are offering new ways to work with their original designs and in many cases improving on them.

I love a forward looking synthesizer as much as anyone, but it’s also shortsighted to discard the past for the same of some imagined progress. New doesn’t always mean better. At our core, we are the same animals that invented analog synthesis, so why would the aesthetic that we revered then drastically change? Sure, things go in and out of fashion, but some things become classics that transcend time. I’m watching season 2 of Foundation and they liberally use art styles from the ancient Greeks, and tie it to Art Deco, Brutalism, Bohemianism, etc. We are in a “post modern” world.

Exactly. People forget that the classics were mostly unobtainable to most people due to their very high prices. I didn’t see a Jupiter 8 until I started working in a music shop, and I definitely didn’t make enough money there to buy one.

Now I have the funds, but no desire to have a room full of antiques just to get a specific tone when I need it. A plugin is perfect.

We were and are doing forward looking synths in the last 6 years starting with Quantum and going forward with the Iridium line. Still one of the most innovative in the market. Now, I had a bit of pleasure to pay a little homage to our first product.

Ok, if you refer to the plug-in world though, then yes, we have just restarted our efforts here with the Microwave plug-in. But hey, we'll speak again.

I like that they are giving the Microwave some serious support and I hope they will move on to make the other products better when they have perfected this one (Even the newly release Largo V2)
