Hey,

here are some hints to run Jeskola Buzz DAW on Linux:

recently for Ubuntu Mate 23.4:

Somewhat unrelated topic, but the Linux support is part of the Linux experience.
Over at UbuntuForums they are talking about shutting those forums down or maybe some other change.

I don't use Ubuntu Linuxes anymore, but if anybody is into that stuff, you might want to check in there if you want to before the forums shut down. Maybe I'm wrong, I can't be sure, maybe it's just gossip??? but they seemed kinda serious about it.

Post

Looks serious. I'm surprised it lasted that long.

No big deal. Those are heavily censored by (canonical employees) forums, and ubuntu is a distro I wouldn't recommend as they tend to hack a lot of upstream code, and introduce bugs as a result. Plus, canonical periodically comes up with "projects" that unnecessarily compete with, and try to undermine, more widely adopted standards (ie, canonical is a notable example of "Not Invented Here" NIH syndrome) such as Snap, Unity, and Mir.

I'm fine with canonical related stuff going away.

Post

Ubuntu does as Ubuntu does. No surprise in who gets to take down their forum first.

And vendor employee controlled forums are much less useful than independent ones.

Post

I don’t disagree with what anyone here has said, but to see this happen (if it really happens), is kind of sad after Shuttlworth assured everyone that he was going to build up the forums and the community. This is why I try to stay with an independent, community owned and run distro. I use Fedora, and before anyone brings up Red Hat or IBM, I want to note that Fedora is way more independent than Ubuntu ever was. They may get funding, or developers on loan, or site storage for free, but they are truly an independent team, when compared to Canonical.

interesting comments, guys. thanks. i'm with you on that.

i'm glad i shifted from the 'buntus to the arch varieties.
i totally get what you guys are saying about the creeping "corporate controllerism" (what i call it).

back in the day, i was witness to when the forums got strongarmed and partially shut down all of a sudden, and they locked up tons of active forums for no reason and no breach of the rules. some of the problem solving got interrupted and it was really rude. that's part of what pushed me towards something else.

and i dodge snap and flatpak even now. but i do like appImage and just regular download and run (like Reaper).

you guys rock with how you're already aware.
peace be with y'all.

Linux has Real-Time now. Isn't this a BIG deal for audio?

Post

It's a very big deal for Linux audio users. I've been following every little update on this very, very closely for years. We've already been benefiting from this for several years now from kernels being compiled with these out of tree patches included, and the use of kernel boot parameters to activate this functionality. But, the nice thing is that the real time patches won't be considered outsider code anymore--it will be (all of it) merged into the mainline. This is a big deal for us because latency affects what we do. It is FINALLY merged! YAY!!! :D

I predict there will be throughput cost associated with RT. Waiting for phoronix.com to test.

I'll save you the trouble of waiting to know--there will absolutely be a throughput cost associated with RT. Throughput and RT are opposite ends of a balanced scale--when one goes up, the other goes down. This is the same with every OS, and probably even a law somewhere in physics. :)

Which linux would you recommend for mac m1? Or is it to early to get good results on M series?

It appears to depend upon which M1 machine you have, but in general, it also appears to be too soon to tell how well it will work (or how much effort you'll have to put into it). This is especially true if you want to use your machine as a DAW, which requires stability and speed.

https://asahilinux.org/fedora/#device-support (This tells you which Macs and which processors and devices on those Macs are currently supported.)

You'll find more information half-way down this page, once you get past the discussion of "naming conventions": https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments ... _on_linux/ Some of it is a bit old, but you can follow links to see what has been fixed since then. (Unfortunately, several of the links lead to other GitHub pages, which are not fun to crawl through to find the info you want.)

There are some people on KVR who really know Linux well and might say Linux on a Mac is ready for use. But you may want to temper their...erm, "enthusiasm" with your own Linux experiences and/or the time and effort you have available to put into getting it to work.

If you do decide to try it, I hope it goes well for you, and maybe you can drop back by here to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.
