A flexible wave shaper with an EQ before and after, can do this. I'd suggest removing extreme lows and highs (along with and extreme non harmonic resonance) on the way in to a very soft knee clipper curve, and then add back the subtracted frequencies to taste.

If I want subtle transient taming, I use OD DeEdger (sold by Tokyo Dawn Labs). It works very differently compared to a traditional transient designer. It's far more subtle and works on pretty much any type of audio material, not just percussive or transient heavy things.

I also often run this first and then into a good tape emulation (for example Softube Tape). That combination is extremely good for softening things.

Your terms are non-specific and can be referring to various different aspects of sound. Transient shaping will tame the attack of sounds, but that doesn't necessarily make them smooth. Saturation plugins will add warmth by adding non-liner harmonics. Filters or EQ can tame high-end which can remove harshness. You have to know what exactly you are after, and for that you need to start training your ears and learning what the various plugins do.
