Hey!

According to Steinberg's homepage a bigger L3 cache can improove the audio performance, namely the real time processing.

Does anbody have compared the effects of a bigger (L3) cache? I know, it is hard to compare without changing other system paramters, but perhaps someone can report some experiences? :)

Apparently AMD's x3d chips are better in Kontakt. But otherwise not so much. Keep in mind they are lower clocked than the x chips.

After doing that testing, the other sticking point I have is that the X3D chips tend to hot spot badly as the extra cache being mounted on the chips limits the degree of contact the die stack has with the heat-spreader to some degree. There's probably an argument for a VSL ensemble render box or other extremely sample heavy scenario, but when you're working with mixed loads the benefits of the X3D get outshone by the better raw performance found on the regular (and easier to cool) x series chips.

yes in everytday tasks such practical things like cooling are more important (perhaps affecting clock, too).
On the low end there are mobile chips with low L3 cache like the phoenix series of AMD, namely the 7940 and the 8000G series with only 16 MB monolithic design. This is much less then other desktop CPUs have. They have quite high base clock instead. But doy ou notice this difference in L3 cache?

My experience has been that much more than "normal" L3 cache only helps some applications, but that much less L3 cache than "normal" hurts everything.

Don't buy crippled computers.
