But does speak to the silliness of actually linking Massive X so intimately with the OG by naming it so. Given the impact and reverence people have for Massive, I think people expected something as good/better. Imo it is better but its also just a completely different synth. When you set the bar high like that, it's almost inevitable that it's not
going to get there. Long way of saying Massive X is a shitty name for a synth.
Anyway, I do find it frustrating to use at times. Nothing deal breaking but enough annoyances that I don't always feel anticipatory joy when I think about whipping it out. But I almost always end up creating something really unique and leave my sound design session having learned something. MX just does the best sounding simple FM that I've heard, perfect for the styles of psytrance and progressive stuff I make. So clean and consistent. Also using the exciter envelope with the comb filter for physical modelling- outside of a distinctly PM synth, this is probably the best out there.
One major gripe though (besides the pan issue I mentioned earlier) is how f**king annoying the performers are to program. Super fiddly. But once dialed in, sounds great. Also wish there was some simple mod sources like unipolar/bipolar note on random as found it many other synths. Setting it up with the random LFO is easy enough but I still don't know how to emulate Serums for example note on random. I can get close.
Also just having velocity as a mod source to drop wherever one requires it. The way I have to do it is applying an envelope to whatever parameter because velocity doesn't seem available in any other way. This is a silly way to do things. I'd also like more unison options- it's always global, but often I want a simple monophonic base sound with another unsioned layer swarming around it. This just isn't possible.
That said, all the downsides are just the way it is and if one synth can't do something, I've got another 15 that do it. But because of the arbitrary limitations, I usually use MX to generate wavetables for use in Serum or Current, or bounce out atmospheric samples to drop into a granular engine.

Unless i misunderstand your post, the T1-4 trackers can be set as velocity dependant/keytracking/gate etc. Great way to modulate effects (examples: tb303 style accents, auto ducking delay, letting the reverb fully open on note off, various sidechain, even pseudo dynamic eq)swilow11 wrote: Mon Oct 07, 2024 3:08 am Also just having velocity as a mod source to drop wherever one requires it. I like the performer but i wish it had undo/redo.

I see the issue here. They're talking about Massive X, but you mistook it for Massive D. Easy mistake.digitalboytn wrote: Mon Oct 07, 2024 9:15 amswilow11 wrote: Mon Oct 07, 2024 3:08 am

Hmm. That's actually a really good point about the trackers. To be honest, I had almost ignored them beyond generating stereo spread and for comb filter physical modelling stuff. Cheers!Daru925 wrote: Mon Oct 07, 2024 5:33 amUnless i misunderstand your post, the T1-4 trackers can be set as velocity dependant/keytracking/gate etc. Great way to modulate effects (examples: tb303 style accents, auto ducking delay, letting the reverb fully open on note off, various sidechain, even pseudo dynamic eq)swilow11 wrote: Mon Oct 07, 2024 3:08 am Also just having velocity as a mod source to drop wherever one requires it. i dont want to come out like a fanboy or something but this thing is so complex you can use only sinewaves and make crazy sounds, you dont even need wavetables, just noise and sinewaves

I don't spend nearly enough time playing with massive x but it makes great noises. I will make a pad or a sequenced sound with it every so often to start off a project, but it isn't something that jumps to mind while I'm in the process of producing that often. I'd love to see it with MPE support. All the fun feedback routing could be abused in very interesting ways.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.
