What is the Absolute Cheapest Simplest Multi-Track Recording Set-Up?

Not interested in FX, MIDI, etc. Just audio tracks (4 minimum) for getting down a rough demo.

For hardware, I highly recommend the Zoom R4 (compact, also works as an interface). You can get a used Zoom R8 at a lower price if you don't need 32-bit floating point audio. The Tascam DP-008EX is said to be a classic and has pan knobs unlike the Zoom ones.

As for software, you can just use Audacity for free and a good audio interface like the MOTU M2. An iPad Air 3 (or Gen 9 iPad) with Loopy and Garageband is also nice! Also, maybe consider No-Fi (https://www.giorgiosancristoforo.net/).

IOS tablets/phones can be used with an interface and record on Garage Band. Not sure about Android or Kindle.

I do have an Audient iD14 mk2 interface that I just listed for sale, but I could keep if a tablet would work . . . can't imagine how my old iPhone would work . . . but?

I changed the title.

Reaper

Reaper is great but not the fastest or simplest and a Computer is needed.

This.
Zoom H4 is another approach.

Get the Tascam DP-008EX. It includes microphones, with nice knobs (Zoom is fiddly sliders):

If you need faders, get the DP-03SD

I find the new Zoom R4 to have good sliders and buttons. And the mic/amp quality is decent!

Oh i just realized you dont want a computer. Go with zoom. Its cheap but it does the job. Been using their H series for years (H4 H5).

Zoom over Tascam? If so, which model? There seems to be a lot of models.

Obviously go with the models with the capability to record at least 4 tracks simultaneously right? Isn't that what you want? I'm sure you can read so just go to the website and look at the specs for all the portable recorders.
It's for basic 4-track recording, you can't go wrong with zoom (or tascam but the latter is probably more expensive).
